Description

Burmester Porto Tawny is a smooth, approachable expression of Portugal’s classic fortified wine style, recognised by its clear tawny-brown colour and elegant balance between ripe fruit and gentle vanilla. Produced by one of Porto’s historic houses, it combines traditional winemaking with a soft, fresh-fruited character that makes it especially versatile at the table.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Tawny shows a clear brownish-tawny hue. The nose is inviting and gently aromatic, with impressions of mature fruit complemented by a subtle note of vanilla. On the palate, it is velvety and rounded, offering a pleasing freshness alongside its ripe, fruit-driven character. As a non-vintage Tawny, it is intended to be enjoyed for its immediate drinkability rather than extended bottle ageing; once opened, it is best consumed within a few weeks when stored in a cool place.

Production
The grapes are destemmed, crushed and fermented with extended maceration to preserve colour, tannins and aromatic intensity. Once the desired level of sweetness has been reached, grape spirit is added to stop fermentation and fortify the wine. The resulting Port is matured to develop the mellow, tawny style associated with the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia, although specific vineyard and grape details are not provided.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, ideally at around 10–14°C. Burmester Porto Tawny is particularly well suited to desserts featuring caramel, coffee, apricot or dried fruit, and pairs naturally with tiramisu, hazelnut meringue and Brie. It generally does not require decanting, making it a convenient choice for relaxed after-dinner service.

Producer
The Burmester name derives from the German word “Burgmeester”, meaning mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in the northern German town of Moelln. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain business in London, and in 1750 the company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia, where it began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities were highly regarded in London, and the historic Burmester name is still commemorated by Burmester Road in the Wimbledon area. Today, the house remains an important name in the Port tradition.
