Description

Burmester Porto Tawny is a smooth, approachable fortified wine with a clear tawny-brown colour and an inviting combination of ripe fruit and vanilla. Produced by one of Porto’s historic houses, it reflects the traditional style of Tawny Port: gently oxidative, fruit-forward and ready to enjoy without further bottle ageing.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a bright tawny-brown appearance. On the nose, aromas of mature red and dried fruit are complemented by soft vanilla notes, creating an attractive and gently evolved character. On the palate, it is velvety and well-rounded, with a pleasant freshness balancing its ripe, fruity sweetness. Its texture is smooth and easy-drinking, making it an accessible introduction to Tawny Port. As a non-vintage Tawny, it is bottled ready to drink and is not intended for extended ageing after release.

Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing a prolonged maceration, helping to preserve colour, tannins and aromatic character. Fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape brandy once the desired level of sweetness has been reached, creating the wine’s characteristic balance of richness and freshness. Burmester Port is traditionally associated with Vila Nova de Gaia, across the Douro River from Porto.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally at around 10–14°C. It is an excellent match for desserts featuring caramel, coffee, apricot or dried fruit, and works particularly well with tiramisu, hazelnut meringue and Brie. Decanting is generally unnecessary; simply pour and serve, although opening the bottle shortly before serving can allow the aromas to develop.

Producer
The Burmester name has German origins, deriving from “Burgmeester”, meaning mayor, and the family came from the town of Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain trading business in London, before moving the company to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and beginning to export Port to the British Isles and elsewhere in Europe. The family became highly respected for its commercial and financial activities in London—the famous Burmester Road in Wimbledon is a lasting reminder of its prominence—while the house remains an established name in the Port trade.
