Description
Burmester Porto Sotto Voce Reserve is an elegant Portuguese Port with a deep ruby colour, generous fruit character and a smooth, warming finish. Presented in an attractive gift tube, it makes a refined choice for special occasions and reflects the long-standing Port-making tradition of the Burmester house, established in Vila Nova de Gaia in the 18th century.
Tasting Notes
The wine shows a beautiful ruby-red appearance. Its aroma is elegant and expressive, combining notes of wild berries with ripe fruit. On the palate, it is youthful and lively, with soft, rounded warmth and a lingering finish that leaves a lasting impression.
This Reserve Port is approachable on release and is ready to enjoy now. Once opened, it is best consumed within a few weeks when stored in a cool, dark place with the bottle well sealed.
Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing extended maceration, a process designed to preserve their colour, tannins and aromatic character. Fermentation is stopped by the addition of grape spirit once the desired level of sweetness has been achieved, creating the rich, balanced style associated with Port. Specific vineyard and terroir details are not provided.
Food & Serving
Enjoy this Port with rich chocolate desserts, wild berry dishes, cheesecake, panna cotta with raspberry sauce or chocolate truffles. It also pairs beautifully with a selection of cheeses, including Camembert. Serve slightly chilled at around 12–16°C. Decanting is generally not necessary for this Reserve Port, although a brief pour into a decanter can help it open up before serving.
Producer
The Burmester family name derives from “Burgmeester”, the German word for mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading business in London, Burmester & Nash. The company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and began exporting Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial influence in London was significant, and its legacy is commemorated by Burmester Road in Wimbledon.
