Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing extended maceration, a process designed to preserve their colour, tannins and aromatic character. The Burmester family name derives from “Burgmeester”, the German word for mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading business in London, Burmester & Nash. The company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and began exporting Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial influence in London was significant, and its legacy is commemorated by Burmester Road in Wimbledon.
