Description

Burmester Porto Ruby is a vibrant, fruit-driven Port with a deep ruby colour and a pleasing balance of richness and freshness. Produced by one of the historic Port houses of Vila Nova de Gaia, it offers an accessible expression of classic Portuguese fortified wine and is ideal for enjoying young.

Tasting Notes
The wine shows a deep, dark ruby-red colour. Its nose is powerful yet elegant, marked by generous aromas of ripe red and dark fruit. On the palate, a beautiful fruit bouquet unfolds with both concentration and freshness, followed by a long, persistent finish. As a non-vintage Ruby Port, it is blended for consistency and is intended to be enjoyed upon release rather than aged in bottle. Once opened, it is best stored in a cool place or refrigerated and consumed within a few weeks.

Production
The grapes are sourced from the Douro Valley, whose steep, schist-rich vineyards and warm, dry climate are ideally suited to Port production. After destemming and crushing, the grapes undergo extended maceration to extract colour, tannins and aromatic character. Once the desired level of sweetness has been reached, grape spirit is added to stop fermentation and fortify the wine, preserving its natural fruitiness.

Food & Serving
Serve Burmester Porto Ruby slightly chilled at around 12–14°C. It makes an excellent aperitif and pairs especially well with ice cream-based desserts, strawberry yoghurt desserts and soft, creamy cheeses such as Camembert served with raspberries and rosemary. Decanting is not necessary, although allowing the wine to rest briefly in the glass can help its fruity aromas open up.

Producer
The Burmester name has German origins, deriving from “Burgmeester”, or mayor, and the family came from the town of Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading company in London, Burmester & Nash, before moving the business to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and beginning to ship Port to the British Isles and elsewhere in Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities were highly regarded in London, and the Wimbledon area’s Burmester Road is said to reflect this historical connection. Today, Burmester remains an established name in the Port region, recognised for its elegant, fruit-focused style.
