Description

Burmester Porto Ruby is a richly coloured, fruit-driven fortified wine that offers an inviting introduction to the classic style of Ruby Port. Non-vintage and crafted for immediate enjoyment, it combines generous berry fruit with refreshing vitality and a long, satisfying finish. Its story reaches back to 1750, when Burmester began shipping Port from Vila Nova de Gaia to Britain and the rest of Europe.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby-red in appearance, this Port has a powerful yet elegant nose filled with vivid, fruit-forward aromas. The palate reveals a beautiful bouquet of ripe fruit, supported by impressive concentration and a pleasing freshness. Its lingering finish makes it equally appealing as an aperitif or alongside dessert. As a non-vintage Ruby Port, it is blended to deliver a consistent, youthful expression rather than reflect the character of a single harvest. It is ready to drink on release and is best enjoyed while its fresh, vibrant fruit is at the forefront; extended bottle ageing is generally not necessary.

Production
The grapes are destemmed and crushed before undergoing extended maceration, a process designed to extract and preserve colour, tannins and aromatic intensity. Once the desired level of sweetness has been reached, grape brandy is added to stop fermentation and fortify the wine. Specific vineyard sites, harvesting methods and maturation details are not provided.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled at around 12–16°C. Burmester Porto Ruby is delicious as an aperitif and pairs especially well with ice cream desserts, strawberry yoghurt mousse, or Camembert served with raspberries and rosemary. It does not normally require decanting; simply open and serve, although allowing it a few minutes in the glass can help its fruit aromas unfold.

Producer
The Burmester name derives from the German word “Burgmeester”, meaning mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash established a grain-trading company in London, Burmester & Nash, before relocating to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and entering the Port trade. The family’s commercial and financial reputation was highly respected in London, where Burmester Road in Wimbledon commemorates their enduring connection with the city.
