Description
Burmester 2019 Late Bottled Vintage Port combines the richness of a vintage-dated Port with the convenience of a wine designed for earlier enjoyment. Presented in its original gift tube, it is an elegant choice for gifting or for finishing a special meal. The Burmester family has been involved in the Port trade since the 18th century, with roots extending from northern Germany to Vila Nova de Gaia.
Tasting Notes
The wine has a lively, deep red colour with a distinctive purple rim. Its expressive nose reveals wild berries, ripe plums and balsamic nuances, creating an inviting balance between fruit and aromatic complexity.
On the palate, the wild-fruit character returns alongside generous plum notes. Full-bodied, soft and complex, it is supported by noticeable tannins that provide structure and a long, satisfying finish. This 2019 LBV is approachable now, while its concentration and tannic backbone should allow it to develop further in bottle for several years when properly stored.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, at approximately 14–16°C, to preserve its freshness and balance. It is an excellent match for peppered filet mignon, veal with béarnaise sauce and mature, creamy cheeses such as Camembert. For dessert, pair it with chocolate-and-mint cheesecake or a pear and chocolate mille-feuille. As an LBV, it is generally ready to enjoy without decanting; decanting is optional if you wish to separate any natural sediment or allow the wine to open further in the glass.
Producer
The Burmester name derives from “Burgmeester”, meaning burgomaster, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash established a grain-trading company in London, Burmester & Nash. The business moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750, where it began shipping Port to the British Isles and the rest of Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities became highly regarded in London, and the well-known Burmester Road in the Wimbledon area is said to commemorate the family name.
