Description

Burmester Porto Colheita 1978 is a single-vintage tawny Port, offering a distinctive opportunity to experience the evolution of one exceptional harvest over many years in wood. Its long maturation brings the layered, nutty character and refined complexity associated with mature Colheita Port, while the 1978 vintage adds considerable historical appeal.

Tasting Notes
Deep amber to mahogany in colour, this mature Colheita shows a complex bouquet of toasted nuts, dried apricots, raisins and caramel, with hints of vanilla, orange peel and subtle spice. The palate is rich yet poised, combining concentrated dried-fruit sweetness with notes of walnut, toffee and mature oak. A balanced line of acidity keeps the wine fresh, leading to a long, warming finish. Already fully mature and ready to enjoy, this Port is unlikely to benefit significantly from further ageing once opened. An unopened bottle can continue to develop if stored in a cool, dark place, although its future condition will also depend on the bottling date and storage history.

Production
As a Colheita Port, this wine comes from a single vintage—1978—and is matured in wooden casks rather than being blended across multiple years. The traditional style allows gradual oxidative development, concentrating the wine and building its characteristic aromas of nuts, dried fruit and caramel. Specific vineyard sites, grape varieties, harvesting methods and vinification details for this bottle have not been provided.

Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, ideally at around 12–14°C. This mature Port is excellent with crème brûlée, almond pastries, dried-fruit desserts, mature cheeses or foie gras, and can also be enjoyed on its own as an after-dinner wine. Decanting is not usually essential for an old Colheita, as it has already matured in wood; however, careful decanting can remove any sediment and present the wine at its best. Once opened, store it upright in a cool place and enjoy within several weeks.

Producer
The Burmester name derives from the German word “Burgmeester,” meaning mayor, reflecting the family’s origins in Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading business in London under the name Burmester & Nash. The company moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities were highly regarded in London, and Burmester Road in Wimbledon is a lasting reminder of the family’s historical prominence.
