Description
Burmester 20 Years Old Tawny Port is a refined, wood-aged Portuguese fortified wine, valued for its remarkable balance of richness, freshness and mature complexity. As part of Burmester’s long-standing Port tradition, it reflects a style shaped by decades of careful maturation in cask rather than by a single vintage.
Tasting Notes
The wine is delicately golden-yellow in the glass, with attractive ochre highlights. Its mature bouquet is rich and layered, revealing notes of seasoned wood, toasted nuts, raisins and honey.
On the palate, it is full-bodied and concentrated, with a silky texture and beautifully integrated sweetness. Nutty, dried-fruit and honeyed flavours develop gradually before leading into a long, velvety finish. A 20 Years Old Tawny Port is ready to enjoy on release, though a well-stored bottle can remain pleasurable for several years after opening; keep it cool and refrigerated once opened.
Production
This Tawny Port is produced in Portugal according to the traditional Port method, with fermentation interrupted by the addition of grape spirit to preserve natural sweetness and fortify the wine. It is then matured in wooden casks, where gradual oxidation develops its golden colour and characteristic aromas of nuts, dried fruit and honey. As a non-vintage, age-designated Port, the final blend represents a house style built from wines of different harvests, rather than the character of one particular vintage.
Food & Serving
Serve slightly chilled, at approximately 12–14°C, to highlight its freshness and aromatic detail. It is an excellent companion to strong, mature cheeses and pâté, while its nutty sweetness also works beautifully with desserts, caramel, dried fruit and nuts. Decanting is generally unnecessary, although carefully pouring the wine into a clean decanter can help remove any sediment from an older bottle and make serving easier.
Producer
Burmester’s history began in 1730, when Henry Burmester and John Nash established Burmester & Nash as a grain-trading company in London. The business moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750 and soon began shipping Port to the British Isles and wider Europe. The Burmester family’s commercial and financial standing was highly regarded in London—a legacy commemorated by Burmester Road in Wimbledon. Today, the name remains closely associated with elegant, traditionally matured Port from the Douro and Vila Nova de Gaia.
