Description

Burmester Douro Ensaio nº 1 2024 is an elegant Portuguese white wine from the Douro, combining vibrant fruit with a smooth, rounded texture. Its name, “Ensaio nº 1,” suggests a distinctive first expression, while the Burmester name brings with it a long history of Portuguese wine and Port production dating back to the 18th century.

Tasting Notes
Bright lemon-yellow in appearance, the wine opens with fresh, fruity aromas and an elegant, inviting character. On the palate, it is velvety and expressive, with pronounced flavours of tropical fruit and white-fleshed fruit. Excellent balance leads into a long, complex finish. It is designed to be enjoyed in its youth, when its fruit-driven freshness and supple texture are at their most expressive.

Production
Produced in Portugal’s Douro region, this wine reflects the area’s distinctive winegrowing heritage. The available information does not specify the grape varieties or harvesting methods. Fermentation took place in stainless-steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 12–16°C for 25 days, preserving the wine’s fresh fruit character. It then matured for six months on fine lees before bottling, contributing to its soft, rounded mouthfeel and added complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve well chilled at approximately 8–10°C. Its tropical and white-fruit profile, balanced acidity and velvety texture make it a natural partner for grilled or baked fish, shellfish, sushi, fresh salads and light poultry dishes. Decanting is not necessary; simply open shortly before serving to allow the aromas to develop in the glass.

Producer
The Burmester family name derives from the German word “Burgmeester,” meaning mayor, and traces its origins to Mölln in northern Germany. In 1730, Henry Burmester and John Nash founded a grain-trading company in London under the name Burmester & Nash. The business moved to Vila Nova de Gaia in 1750, where it began shipping Port to the British Isles and across Europe. The family’s commercial and financial activities were highly regarded in London, and Wimbledon’s well-known Burmester Road is associated with the family name. Today, Burmester remains a historic and respected name in Portuguese wine.
