Description

Bruno Lorenzon Mercurey 1er Cru Champ Martin Rouge 2022 is a refined, terroir-driven Pinot Noir from one of the true precision specialists of the Côte Chalonnaise. This Premier Cru bottling captures the tension, purity and finesse that have made Lorenzon a quiet insider favourite among Burgundy lovers. Expect a wine that delivers the depth of serious Burgundy with a vibrant, contemporary edge.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Champ Martin shows a luminous ruby colour with garnet highlights at the rim, signalling both youth and concentration. The nose is finely etched, opening with wild red berries, sour cherry and cranberry, followed by rose petals, crushed violets and a subtle woodland note. With air, more detail emerges: hints of baking spice, graphite, orange zest and a delicate touch of fine French oak. On the palate, the wine is tense yet silky, with a pinpoint, almost chiselled structure that is very much Lorenzon’s hallmark. Juicy redcurrant, cherry and raspberry fruit sit over a core of mineral drive, giving a mouthwatering, saline finish. The tannins are ultra-fine and powdery, framing the fruit without ever dominating, while fresh, linear acidity keeps everything lifted and energetic. It is already charming in its youth but will gain complexity and nuance over the next 5–10 years, becoming more savoury and truffle-tinged with bottle age.

Production
Champ Martin is a Premier Cru climat in Mercurey, characterised by limestone-rich soils with clay and small stones that favour Pinot Noir with both aromatic lift and structure. Bruno Lorenzon is known for meticulous work in the vineyard: low yields, careful canopy management and precise, often organic-leaning farming aimed at capturing the purest possible expression of site. Grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness and rigorously sorted to ensure only the healthiest berries make it into the cuvée. In the cellar, fermentation proceeds with a gentle touch to avoid over-extraction, preserving finesse and aromatics. The wine is then matured in carefully selected French oak barrels (with a restrained use of new wood) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the fruit or the imprint of the terroir.

Food & Serving
This Mercurey 1er Cru pairs beautifully with refined yet flavourful dishes: roast duck breast with cherries, herb-crusted lamb, veal tenderloin, mushroom risotto, roasted root vegetables or poultry in a light jus. It is also excellent with charcuterie and semi-hard cheeses such as Comté or Tomme. Serve at 14–16°C to highlight its aromatic detail and freshness. Young bottles benefit from 30–60 minutes in a decanter to let the bouquet fully open; as it ages, a gentle pour and a bit of time in the glass will usually be sufficient.

Producer
Bruno Lorenzon is a highly regarded, small-scale producer based in Mercurey, in the Côte Chalonnaise, and is often cited by Burgundy insiders as one of the benchmarks of the appellation. The estate has built its reputation on extreme attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar, favouring precise viticulture, low yields and a clear, transparent expression of each individual parcel. Lorenzon’s wines have played an important role in elevating Mercurey’s standing, proving that the village can produce Premier Cru bottlings with the tension, depth and aromatic refinement to rival more famous names further north. His cuvées are regularly praised by critics and collectors for their clarity of terroir, purity of fruit and ageworthy elegance.
