Description

Bruichladdich Black Art 11.1 is one of Islay’s most mysterious and sought-after single malts, released without revealing its cask recipe. Crafted from the distillery’s unpeated spirit and bottled at natural strength, it showcases Bruichladdich’s experimental side while keeping the details of maturation closely guarded.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep, polished amber hue that hints at its long and varied cask influence. The nose is layered and seductive, with notes that can range from ripe dark fruit and honeyed malt to vanilla, toasted oak, dried citrus, spice, and subtle coastal nuances. On the palate, Black Art 11.1 is known for depth and texture: rich malt sweetness, orchard fruit, baking spice, cocoa, oak, and a long, elegant finish with gentle warmth. It is designed for contemplative sipping rather than casual drinking, and its complexity should continue to impress in bottle for years.

Production
Produced at Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay, Black Art is made from unpeated spirit and matured in a selection of carefully chosen casks, though the exact cask make-up is never disclosed. The whisky is bottled at natural cask strength and usually without chill filtration or added colour, allowing the spirit’s texture and cask-driven character to remain front and centre. Its style reflects Islay terroir through the distillery’s coastal location, even without the typical peat smoke associated with the island.

Food & Serving
Best enjoyed neat or with a few drops of water to open up its aromatic layers. For food, pair it with dark chocolate, crème brûlée, roasted nuts, blue cheese, or richly sauced game dishes. Serve at room temperature, and decanting is not necessary, though letting it rest in the glass for a few minutes will help reveal more detail.

Producer
Bruichladdich, founded in 1881 on Islay, is one of Scotland’s most distinctive distilleries and is widely respected for its progressive approach to whisky making. Since its revival, the distillery has built a strong reputation for transparency, terroir-driven production, and a willingness to challenge convention. Black Art has become one of its most iconic releases, admired for its rarity, craftsmanship, and air of secrecy.
