Description

Brugal 1888 Ron Gran Reserva is a super-premium Dominican rum crafted to celebrate the year the Brugal family founded their distillery in 1888. Double-aged in both American bourbon casks and European sherry casks, it delivers remarkable depth, polish and complexity in the glass. This cuvée captures more than 130 years of rum-making heritage, refined over five generations of the Brugal family.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Brugal 1888 shows a deep, dark amber hue with mahogany highlights, hinting at its long maturation in two types of oak. The nose is refined and ever-evolving: layers of warm baking spices, cocoa, roasted coffee beans, vanilla and toffee unfold alongside dried fruits and a gentle touch of cinnamon. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, velvety rum with a beautifully rounded, almost creamy texture. Flavors of caramel, dark sugar and dried fig meet notes of toasted oak, licorice and a subtle smokiness from the prolonged barrel contact. The sweetness is balanced by gentle tannins and spice, leading into a long, elegant finish. Brugal 1888 is designed to be enjoyed now, but its structure and integration of oak suggest it will continue to develop further nuance in an unopened bottle over the coming years.

Production
Brugal 1888 is produced in the Dominican Republic, where a warm Caribbean climate and ocean breezes create ideal conditions for sugarcane cultivation and barrel aging. The rum is distilled from high-quality molasses and then aged first in carefully selected ex-bourbon American oak casks, which contribute vanilla, caramel and coconut notes. It is then transferred to European oak sherry casks, adding layers of dried fruit, spice and complexity. The casks are laid horizontally in specially designed aging houses so that the spirit remains in constant contact with the wood, encouraging maximum extraction and a harmonious integration of flavors. This meticulous double-aging process is at the heart of the rum’s balance and depth.

Food & Serving
Brugal 1888 is best enjoyed neat or with a large, slow-melting ice cube to allow its aromas to unfold. Serve at a cool room temperature, around 18–20°C (64–68°F); no lengthy decanting is required, but letting the glass sit for a few minutes will reward you with extra complexity. Its rich, layered profile makes it a natural partner for dark chocolate, tiramisu, crème brûlée or desserts with coffee and caramel. It also pairs beautifully with roasted nuts, aged hard cheeses, or a fine cigar. For a more indulgent experience, use it as the premium base in an Old Fashioned–style rum cocktail, where its sherry and spice notes can truly shine.

Producer
Founded in 1888 by Don Andrés Brugal Montaner in the Dominican Republic, Brugal is one of the country’s most historic and influential rum producers. Over more than five generations, the family has honed a house style that emphasizes dryness, structure and elegance, setting Brugal apart in the Caribbean rum landscape. The distillery is renowned for its expertise in cask management and for pioneering double-aging techniques that bring a whisky-like complexity to its rums. Brugal 1888 stands as a flagship expression of this philosophy and has earned international acclaim, including a gold medal in the “Premium Aged Rum” category at the Miami Rum Festival 2015, underscoring its status among the world’s top sipping rums.
