Description
Bret Brothers La Soufrandière Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts 2023 is a precise, mineral-driven Chardonnay from one of the most coveted terraces in the Mâconnais. Crafted by the Bret brothers, pioneers of meticulous, terroir-focused Burgundy in the south of the region, this cuvée showcases the purity and energy of old-vine fruit. Les Quarts is historically considered the finest climat in Pouilly-Vinzelles, and this 2023 release captures its signature tension, depth and crystalline clarity.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2023 Les Quarts is a bright, luminous straw-yellow with green highlights, promising freshness and intensity. The nose is pure and expressive, with layers of white peach, ripe pear and lemon zest framed by notes of crushed seashells, wet stone and a delicate hint of acacia blossom. Subtle nuances of fresh butter and lightly toasted hazelnut emerge with air, speaking to its sensitive oak élevage rather than overt woodiness.
On the palate, this Chardonnay is both vibrant and structured: a core of juicy stone fruit and citrus is carried by a precise, saline backbone. The texture is fine and mouthcoating without heaviness, with beautifully integrated acidity that stretches the wine out into a long, chalky, mineral finish. Hints of spice and almond echo on the aftertaste. While already charming young, especially with some air, the wine has the concentration and balance to evolve gracefully over 6–10 years, gaining complexity, creaminess and additional tertiary nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Les Quarts is a steep, south- to southeast-facing limestone and clay slope in Pouilly-Vinzelles, long considered the historic heart of the appellation. The vines here are old, deeply rooted in active limestone, which contributes to the wine’s tension, salinity and refined structure. At La Soufrandière, the Bret brothers farm organically and biodynamically, working the soils by hand and harvesting exclusively by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve fruit integrity. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and ferment with native yeasts, followed by élevage predominantly in neutral and carefully selected barrels to add texture without masking terroir. Sulphur is used sparingly, and the focus is on minimal intervention to let the site’s character shine through.
Food & Serving
This Pouilly-Vinzelles Les Quarts pairs beautifully with refined seafood dishes such as scallops in a light butter sauce, poached turbot, sole meunière or simply grilled sea bass. It also complements roast chicken with herbs, veal in cream sauce, richer shellfish like lobster or langoustines, as well as aged hard cheeses and fine Comté. Serve at 10–12°C to highlight its precision and minerality; if possible, decant for 30–45 minutes in its youth to allow the aromatics to open and the texture to broaden in the glass.
Producer
La Soufrandière is the family estate of the Bret brothers, Jean-Guillaume and Jean-Philippe, based in the Mâconnais in southern Burgundy. Originally a small domaine in Pouilly-Vinzelles, it has become one of the leading references for terroir-transparent, organically and biodynamically grown Chardonnay in the region. Through La Soufrandière and their micro-négociant label Bret Brothers, they have played a major role in raising the profile of the Mâconnais, proving it can produce wines of real finesse and aging potential. Their commitment to low yields, meticulous vineyard work, native-yeast fermentations and minimal intervention has earned them a loyal following among Burgundy enthusiasts and sommeliers worldwide.
