Description
Bret Brothers & La Soufrandière Pouilly-Fuissé En Chatenay ZEN 2020 is a beautifully pure expression of Chardonnay from the southern reaches of Burgundy. Crafted with minimal intervention and ultra-low sulfur, it showcases the estate’s ‘ZEN’ philosophy: wines that feel as natural and transparent as the limestone soils they grow in. Drawn from a tiny old-vine parcel of less than a hectare, this cuvée combines Burgundian precision with an almost meditative calm and clarity in the glass.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, En Chatenay ZEN 2020 is a luminous pale gold with subtle green highlights, signaling both freshness and finesse. The nose opens with bright notes of lemon zest, crisp pear, and white peach, layered over hints of chalky stone, smoke and a darker, savory spice. As it breathes, you may pick up delicate nuances of toasted hazelnut, chamomile and a faint flintiness that speaks clearly of Pouilly-Fuissé’s limestone-rich slopes.
On the palate, the wine is precise and vibrant, with a clean, linear attack that broadens into a textured, almost silky mid-palate. Juicy citrus and orchard fruit are framed by a firm, saline backbone and a subtle, understated creaminess from its long élevage. The oak influence is beautifully discreet, offering gentle structure rather than overt flavor. The finish is long, mouthwatering and mineral-driven, with a lingering echo of smoke, spice and citrus peel. While already highly enjoyable now, this 2020 vintage has the structure and tension to evolve gracefully over the next 7–10 years, gaining complexity and deeper tertiary nuances.
Production
The En Chatenay parcel lies at around 250 meters above sea level, on a cool, north-eastern slope in the village of Pouilly-Fuissé in southern Burgundy. Here, 55-year-old Chardonnay vines are rooted in red-brown clay over limestone subsoil, a classic Pouilly-Fuissé terroir that brings both power and precision, with the exposure helping preserve freshness. The vineyard is farmed biodynamically, and harvesting is carried out by hand with strict selection in the vines. The grapes are pressed as whole clusters, then undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts, followed by a natural malolactic fermentation. The wine is aged for 17 months in used oak barrels to avoid overt wood flavor, then assembled and given further time in fully neutral vessels. No oenological additives are used, apart from a very light sulfur addition just before bottling to preserve purity and stability.
Food & Serving
This Pouilly-Fuissé is a natural partner for refined dishes where texture and subtlety take center stage. Think seared scallops with beurre blanc, grilled turbot or halibut, roast chicken with morels, langoustines, or a simple plate of fresh oysters and shellfish. It also pairs beautifully with creamy yet elegant cheeses such as Comté, Beaufort or a mild goat’s cheese. Serve at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to let the aromatics fully unfold without losing tension. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended for young bottles to release the wine’s smoky, mineral complexity, especially if serving with richer cuisine.
Producer
Bret Brothers & La Soufrandière is the project of brothers Jean-Philippe and Jean-Guillaume Bret, who have become leading voices for terroir-driven, sustainable wines in the Mâconnais and Pouilly-Fuissé. La Soufrandière is their family estate, farmed organically and biodynamically, while the Bret Brothers label allows them to craft small, meticulously sourced micro-cuvées from top sites. Their ZEN line pushes the philosophy of minimal intervention even further: very low sulfur, native yeasts, and a light touch in the cellar to let each climat speak for itself. Over the past two decades, the Brets have helped redefine the reputation of southern Burgundy, earning critical acclaim and a devoted following among sommeliers and collectors who seek precise, vibrant white Burgundies with authenticity and energy.
