Description
Brazin Old Vine Zinfandel from Lodi is a bold, characterful California red that showcases exactly why this region is so closely associated with Zinfandel. Made from fruit grown on old vines, some between 35 and 80 years of age, it delivers the intensity, concentration, and depth that have made Lodi one of the most respected Zinfandel regions in the state.
Tasting Notes
Deep, ripe, and generous in style, this Zinfandel typically shows a dark ruby core with plenty of vibrancy in the glass. The nose is often expressive, with aromas of blackberry, plum, black cherry, warm spice, and a hint of vanilla or baked fruit character.
On the palate, expect rich layers of juicy dark berries, soft baking spices, and a supple, rounded texture supported by concentrated fruit from the old vines. The wine’s natural warmth and depth make it immediately appealing, while its structure and intensity suggest good short- to medium-term ageing potential.
Production
The grapes come from old Zinfandel vines rooted in Lodi’s Mediterranean climate and sandy soils, where they can grow deep into the ground in search of water and nutrients. Cool evening air helps preserve freshness and enhances aromatic development, creating small, concentrated berries with impressive flavour. This combination of terroir, vine age, and careful winemaking gives the wine its hallmark power and complexity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with barbecue ribs, grilled sausages, roasted lamb, smoky burgers, and tomato-based dishes with plenty of seasoning. It also works well with hard cheeses and richly spiced food. Serve at around 16–18°C and consider a short decant if you want the aromas to open up more quickly.
Producer
Brazin is one of the wines within the Indelicato family’s portfolio, produced by a third-generation Californian wine family with roots going back to 1924. Of Italian heritage and among the early winery-owning families in California, the Indelicato family has built a strong reputation for craftsmanship and consistency, earning recognition such as American Winery of the Year in 2007. Brazin reflects that legacy by focusing on Zinfandel, the grape most closely tied to California’s identity.
