Description
Brancaia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Magnum 2019 is a commanding, cellar‑worthy expression of Sangiovese from the very heart of Tuscany. Bottled in magnum, it offers greater aging potential and a more harmonious evolution in the bottle, making it ideal for special dinners and serious collectors. As a Gran Selezione, it represents the pinnacle of the Chianti Classico quality pyramid, sourced from Brancaia’s finest estate vineyards and crafted only in outstanding vintages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2019 shows a deep, vibrant ruby red hue with garnet reflections just beginning to emerge, especially at the rim. The nose is intense and precise: ripe red cherries, wild berries, and blood orange peel are layered with notes of dried herbs, violet, tobacco leaf, and a touch of cedar and sweet spice from time in oak.
On the palate, it is refined yet powerful, with a core of concentrated Sangiovese fruit framed by firm, silky tannins and lively, savory acidity. Flavors of sour cherry, plum and raspberry are joined by hints of licorice, dried roses, graphite and a subtle earthy minerality that speaks clearly of Chianti Classico. The finish is long, elegant and persistent, with a pleasant, mouthwatering sapidity. In magnum format, this 2019 has excellent aging potential: it already drinks beautifully with a good decant, but will gain further complexity and polish over 10–15 years from the vintage, and likely beyond in ideal cellaring conditions.
Production
The Brancaia Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is sourced from estate vineyards in Chianti Classico, benefitting from the region’s classic mix of galestro and alberese soils that lend both structure and finesse to Sangiovese. These hillside sites, sitting at moderate altitude, ensure warm days and cooler nights, preserving aromatic freshness and vibrant acidity in the grapes. Harvesting is carried out by hand, with strict selection in the vineyard and again at the sorting table to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy fruit makes it into the final blend. Fermentation takes place in temperature‑controlled stainless steel to capture purity of fruit, followed by an extended maceration to build structure and extract fine tannins. The wine is then matured in carefully chosen oak (often a mix of barriques and larger tonneaux) to add complexity and texture without overwhelming the natural character of Sangiovese, before further bottle aging to achieve the depth and balance expected of a Gran Selezione.
Food & Serving
This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione is a natural partner for rich Tuscan cuisine and hearty, flavor‑driven dishes. Think bistecca alla fiorentina, slow‑cooked ragù with pappardelle, roast lamb with herbs, braised beef, wild boar stew, or game birds. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano, Parmigiano Reggiano, and mature hard cheeses with nutty, savory notes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux or Burgundy-style glasses to allow the aromatics to open fully. Decanting is recommended—about 1–2 hours for current drinking—to soften the tannins and let the wine’s layered bouquet express itself, especially given the magnum format.
Producer
Brancaia is a respected estate in Tuscany with roots dating back to the early 1980s, when the Swiss Widmer family purchased a neglected property in Castellina in Chianti and quickly rose to prominence with critically acclaimed wines. Today, Brancaia is known for its meticulous vineyard work, modern yet sensitive winemaking, and a strong commitment to expressing Tuscan terroir through both traditional and contemporary blends. Within Chianti Classico, the estate has become a benchmark for precise, elegant Sangiovese, and its Gran Selezione bottlings stand among the region’s most serious, age‑worthy reds. Brancaia’s consistent high ratings and international recognition underscore its status as one of the leading producers in Tuscany’s new wave of quality‑driven, terroir‑focused wineries.
