Description
Brancaia Chianti Classico 2024 is a polished expression of Sangiovese from one of the most respected estates in the heart of Chianti Classico. Sourced from vineyards in Castellina in Chianti, it combines classic Tuscan character with Brancaia’s modern, quality-driven style—an estate that has been making waves since the Widmer family acquired the property in 1981.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, expect a bright ruby-red colour with the freshness and transparency typical of Sangiovese. The nose is likely to show red cherry, wild berries, floral notes, and a subtle earthy, savory edge, supported by gentle spice and oak-derived nuance.
On the palate, this should be medium-bodied, lively, and structured, with vibrant acidity, fine tannins, and a clean, elegant finish. The 2024 vintage is made for early enjoyment, but the wine should also have the balance to develop nicely over the next few years.
Production
Brancaia’s Chianti Classico comes from vineyards around Castellina in Chianti at about 200 meters above sea level, with a predominantly southern exposure and soils made up of sand, clay, and silt. The vines are trained in spurred cordon and are hand harvested, with no irrigation used in the vineyard. Brancaia follows integrated production principles, significantly reducing fertilizers and pesticides while encouraging biodiversity through grassing between the rows. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel at 30°C, followed by at least 12 months of aging in oak barrels or concrete tanks, before bottle maturation.
Food & Serving
This is a versatile Chianti Classico that pairs beautifully with Tuscan classics such as pasta with tomato sauce, grilled sausages, roast chicken, lamb, and aged pecorino. Serve it at around 16–18°C, and decanting is not essential, though a short aeration can help the wine open up if enjoyed young.
Producer
Brancaia was founded in 1981 when the Swiss Widmer family purchased a neglected farmhouse in the hills of Castellina in Chianti and began building what would become a benchmark estate in Tuscany. After early national recognition, the winery expanded to include two additional estates and around 80 hectares of vineyards, establishing a strong reputation for quality and precision in Chianti Classico and beyond.
