Description
Branaire-Ducru 2023 is a polished Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Fourth Growth estates, known for combining classic structure with a refined, approachable style. Sourced from a terroir that consistently delivers balance and finesse, it reflects both the pedigree of the appellation and the estate’s long-standing reputation for elegance over excess.
Tasting Notes
At this early stage, the wine is expected to show a deep ruby colour with a vibrant core. The nose typically leans toward blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, graphite, and subtle floral and spice notes, while the palate is usually precise and layered, with firm but supple tannins, fresh acidity, and a long, savoury finish. Like the best wines from Saint-Julien, it should evolve beautifully in bottle, gaining complexity over the next decade or more.
Production
Branaire-Ducru is located in Saint-Julien, on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, where gravel-rich soils and an ideal maritime climate provide excellent conditions for Cabernet-led blends. The estate is known for careful vineyard management and selective harvesting, with vinification aimed at preserving purity, structure, and aromatic precision. The result is a wine that expresses both the depth of the vintage and the distinctive finesse of its terroir.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs naturally with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, and dishes with mushrooms or truffle. Serve at around 16-18°C, and consider decanting for 1-2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Branaire-Ducru is a historic Saint-Julien estate classified as a Fourth Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Over the years, it has earned a strong reputation for producing elegant, consistently reliable wines that reflect the character of the appellation. Today, it is regarded as one of the benchmark names in Saint-Julien for drinkability, balance, and classic Left Bank style.
