Description
Branaire-Ducru 2021 is a classic Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most respected Fourth Growth estates, offering the finesse, structure, and precision that have made the château a benchmark in the appellation. Known for its elegant style and consistently refined expression of the Left Bank, it carries both heritage and contemporary polish in the glass.
Tasting Notes
The 2021 vintage typically shows a deep ruby color with a bright, youthful core. On the nose, expect a refined bouquet of blackcurrant, ripe plum, cedar, graphite, violets, and subtle spice, with a lifted freshness that reflects the cooler conditions of the vintage.
On the palate, Branaire-Ducru 2021 is usually medium-bodied and well-balanced, with polished tannins, vivid acidity, and a composed, linear profile. The wine tends to finish with savory minerality and a long, elegant close, and while approachable in youth, it should develop beautifully over the next 10–20 years.
Production
Sourced from the gravelly soils of Saint-Julien, the estate’s vineyards benefit from excellent drainage and a terroir well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon-driven Bordeaux blends. The grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful sorting to preserve quality and precision.
Vinification is carried out in a traditional yet modernized Bordeaux style, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and maturation in French oak barrels to add depth, structure, and aromatic complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds, and dishes featuring mushrooms or truffle. Serve at 16–18°C, and decant for about 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the bouquet and tannins to open fully.
Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru has long been considered one of Saint-Julien’s most consistent and elegant estates, with roots in Bordeaux’s historic classification system as a 4ème Grand Cru Classé from 1855. The château is admired for its reliability, finesse, and balanced expression of terroir, and it has earned a strong reputation among collectors seeking classic Left Bank wines with both charm and longevity.
