Description
Branaire-Ducru 2021 is a refined Saint-Julien from one of Bordeaux’s most admired Fourth Growth estates, known for combining classic Left Bank structure with elegance and precision. In a cooler, more demanding vintage, it shows the château’s signature balance, fresh energy, and polished style, making it a compelling expression of modern Bordeaux heritage.
Tasting Notes
Branaire-Ducru 2021 typically presents a deep ruby colour with bright purple highlights in youth. The nose is poised and expressive, with notes of blackcurrant, dark cherry, cedar, graphite, violets, and a subtle touch of spice and tobacco typical of Saint-Julien.
On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied, with fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity, and a linear, focused profile. The fruit is precise rather than flashy, supported by savoury oak, mineral tension, and a long, elegant finish. While already attractive in its youth with decanting, it has the structure to evolve beautifully over the next 10–20 years, gaining complexity and depth.
Production
Produced in Saint-Julien on Bordeaux’s Left Bank, Branaire-Ducru benefits from gravelly soils that provide excellent drainage and encourage deep rooting, helping to shape the wine’s finesse and concentration. The estate typically harvests by hand and vinifies plot by plot to preserve the character of each parcel, with careful extraction and ageing in oak barrels to build structure while retaining freshness and aromatic purity.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, entrecôte, duck breast, beef fillet, and game dishes, as well as mushroom-based recipes and mature hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1–2 hours if drinking young to allow the aromas to open and the tannins to soften.
Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru is a historic Fourth Growth estate in Saint-Julien, classified in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. Over the years, it has earned a strong reputation for producing consistently elegant, terroir-driven wines that reflect the harmony and precision of the appellation, and it remains one of the most respected names on the Left Bank.
