Description
Château Branaire-Ducru 2016 is a polished Saint-Julien classified growth that captures the elegance and balance Bordeaux is famous for. Built on a classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it combines structure, finesse and a distinctly left-bank sense of place. As a 4ème Grand Cru Classé from the historic 1855 classification, it carries both pedigree and a strong reputation for reliable quality.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby color with a bright, youthful core. The nose is refined and layered, offering blackcurrant, blackberry, cedar, violet and subtle graphite, with hints of spice and tobacco emerging with air.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with finely textured tannins, lively freshness and a long, precise finish. The fruit is supported by well-integrated oak and a classic Saint-Julien balance of power and restraint. While approachable in youth with proper decanting, it should also develop gracefully over the next 10 to 20 years, gaining more complexity and earthy nuance.
Production
Branaire-Ducru is produced in Saint-Julien, one of Bordeaux’s most respected left-bank appellations, where gravel-rich soils provide excellent drainage and help Cabernet Sauvignon achieve depth and definition. The estate’s vineyards benefit from the moderating influence of the Gironde estuary, which supports even ripening and preserves freshness in the fruit. Grapes are typically harvested parcel by parcel at optimum ripeness, then vinified with careful plot selection and traditional Bordeaux methods to preserve purity, structure and terroir expression.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, beef tenderloin, duck breast, game birds and mushroom-based dishes. It also works well with aged hard cheeses. Serve at around 16–18°C, and decant for 1 to 2 hours if drinking now to help the aromatics open and soften the tannins.
Producer
Château Branaire-Ducru is a long-established Bordeaux estate with roots dating back to the 17th century and a strong identity in Saint-Julien. Classified as a 4ème Grand Cru Classé in 1855, it has built a reputation for producing elegant, consistent wines that reflect the class and harmony of the appellation. Today, it is widely regarded as one of the benchmark properties for refined, age-worthy Saint-Julien.
