Description
Henri Bonneau’s Cuvée Marie Beurrier is one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most coveted wines, known for its rare production and unmistakably old-school character. The 2003 vintage comes from a hot, dramatic year in the Southern Rhône, giving this wine exceptional richness, concentration, and a highly individual expression of the appellation’s historic style.
Tasting Notes
Expect a deep, mature red with garnet and brick tones reflecting age. The nose is typically layered and evolving, with notes of dried cherries, fig, plum compote, Provençal herbs, leather, spice, and earthy garrigue, often lifted by a smoky, savory edge.
On the palate, Cuvée Marie Beurrier is usually full-bodied and richly textured, yet balanced by Bonneau’s signature freshness and finesse. The 2003 vintage may show generous warmth, ripe dark fruit, game, tobacco, and spice, finishing long and persistent. While already developed, well-stored bottles can still offer another period of enjoyment, though it is best appreciated now.
Production
Sourced from old vines in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the wine reflects the region’s famous galets roulés, warm Mediterranean climate, and low-yielding parcels that naturally concentrate flavor. Henri Bonneau was known for traditional vineyard work and extremely small-scale production, with careful hand harvesting and minimal intervention in the cellar. Vinification followed a classic, patient approach, emphasizing long élevage and a style built more on complexity and longevity than overt power.
Food & Serving
This wine pairs beautifully with roast lamb, duck confit, game birds, wild mushroom dishes, and slow-cooked Provençal cuisine. Serve slightly below room temperature, around 16–18°C, and consider decanting if the bottle is showing reduction or if you want to soften the aromas and separate any natural sediment. If well matured, a gentle decant shortly before serving is usually enough.
Producer
Henri Bonneau was a legendary, highly respected grower and producer in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, admired for crafting wines of depth, individuality, and remarkable aging capacity. His tiny production and traditional methods helped cement his cult status among collectors and sommeliers. Today, the Bonneau name remains closely associated with some of the most sought-after wines in the Southern Rhône.
