Description

Bond St. Eden 2017 is a powerful, single-vineyard Cabernet-based red from one of Napa Valley’s most coveted hillside sites in the Vaca Mountains, just north of Oakville. This wine is all about intensity and refinement, channeling the character of its red, stony, iron-rich soils into a deeply layered, ageworthy expression. Celebrated by critics such as Robert Parker for its depth and precision, St. Eden has become one of the benchmark bottlings for collectors seeking the very finest in modern Napa Cabernet.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 St. Eden shows a deep granate-purple hue that hints at its concentration and youth. The nose is at once brooding and seductive, slowly unfurling notes of crushed black cherries, blackcurrant (cassis) and redcurrant, woven with tilled earth, iron, and warm, dusty soil. With air, more nuanced layers emerge: fruitcake, exotic spice, and a subtle, almost savory mineral edge. On the palate, St. Eden 2017 is full-bodied, opulent and velvety, coating the mouth with rich black fruit preserves—think black cherry compote and blackberry jam—lifted by vibrant acidity that keeps everything fresh and precise. Fine-grained tannins provide structure without harshness, allowing the wine’s spicy, dark-fruited core to shine through. The finish is long, exotic and persistent, echoing notes of sweet baking spice, dark chocolate and earthy minerality. Enjoyable now with a proper decant, it has the balance and structure to evolve beautifully over 15–20 years in a good cellar.

Production
St. Eden comes from a meticulously farmed, red, rocky and iron-rich vineyard on the lower slopes of the Vaca Mountains, just north of the Oakville Crossroad in Napa Valley. The site’s well-drained, stony soils and hillside exposition naturally limit yields, concentrating flavor and building structure in the Cabernet Sauvignon and its supporting Bordeaux varieties. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small lots at optimal ripeness, with rigorous sorting in the vineyard and at the winery to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification is carried out with great precision: small-lot fermentations, careful extraction, and élevage in high-quality French oak barrels (a significant portion new) to polish the tannins and add subtle layers of spice, while preserving the pure, site-driven character of the wine.

Food & Serving
Bond St. Eden 2017 shines alongside richly flavored dishes that can stand up to its depth and structure. Think dry-aged ribeye or côte de boeuf, venison or lamb loin with rosemary, truffle-infused dishes, or slow-braised short ribs. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses like Comté, Parmigiano-Reggiano or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) for best balance of fruit and structure. Decanting is highly recommended: give it 2–3 hours in a large decanter if drinking now to allow the aromatics to fully open, or a shorter 1–2 hour decant as it develops further with bottle age.

Producer
Bond is one of Napa Valley’s most revered estate projects, created by Harlan Estate’s Bill Harlan with the singular vision of expressing the distinct personalities of Napa’s finest “Grand Cru–caliber” hillside vineyards. Rather than producing blends from many sources, Bond focuses on a small portfolio of single-vineyard wines—each from unique sites with their own terroir signature. Within this lineup, St. Eden stands out for its red, iron-rich soils and powerful yet refined profile. Over the years, Bond wines have earned consistently high critical acclaim and become highly sought-after by collectors worldwide, cementing the estate’s status as a modern icon of Napa Valley and a benchmark for site-driven Cabernet in the region.

I had the privilege to try Bond St. Eden, and I can say it’s absolutely worth trying. Just wow pure Napa luxury: deep dark fruit, graphite and cedar, with a silky texture and a long powerful finish. It feels polished and serious, and it stays with you long after the last sip 100% worth it.
