Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Demencia Mencía shows a deep cherry-red core with violet reflections, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. The nose opens with vibrant aromas of wild red berries, black cherry and crushed violets, layered with graphite, cracked pepper, dried herbs and a subtle smoky, mineral edge typical of Bierzo’s slate-rich soils. On the palate, this is medium-bodied yet precise and structured, with juicy acidity and fine, chalky tannins giving it a refreshing, almost crunchy feel. Flavours of redcurrant, cherry and plum mingle with notes of licorice, black tea, thyme and a whisper of cocoa from its time in barrel. The finish is long and linear, driven by minerality more than oak, suggesting the wine is built as much for the table as for contemplation. Enjoyable now with a short decant, it has the backbone to develop additional complexity over the next 6–8 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
This Mencía is sourced from carefully tended vineyards around Villafranca del Bierzo, where old vines sink their roots into a mix of slate, quartz and clay, and benefit from the cooling Atlantic breezes that temper the Castilian heat. Yields are kept low, and grapes are usually harvested by hand to allow strict fruit selection in the vineyard and at the winery. Bodegas Demencia de Autor works with a minimal-intervention philosophy: gentle destemming, fermentation in small vats with native yeasts where possible, and attentive extraction to preserve finesse over power. The wine is then aged in a combination of used French oak barrels and/or small vessels, long enough to polish the tannins and add subtle complexity without overshadowing the pure Mencía fruit and its distinctive mineral spine.

Food & Serving
This Bierzo red is a natural partner for flavourful yet not overly heavy dishes. Think grilled lamb chops with rosemary, roast pork with herbs, charcuterie, morcilla, or mushroom-based dishes such as wild mushroom ragù or truffled risotto. It also works beautifully with aged Manchego, semi-hard goat cheeses or simple tapas like chorizo, roasted peppers and jamón. Serve at 15–17°C (59–63°F) to highlight the wine’s freshness and aromatics. A 30–45 minute decant is recommended in its youth to allow the floral and mineral notes to unfold and the tannins to soften.
