Bodegas Demencia de Autor’s Godello Demencia 2023 comes from one of Bierzo’s most intriguing white-wine parcels, a historic vineyard planted in 1905 and now farmed by Nacho Léon. In a region better known for Mencía reds, this Godello stands out for its freshness, precision, and unmistakable sense of place.

Tasting Notes
Pale straw in the glass, it shows a clean, luminous appearance that hints at its restrained style. The nose is expressive yet refined, with notes of white flowers, citrus peel, orchard fruit, and a subtle mineral edge from Bierzo’s slate- and quartz-influenced soils. On the palate, it is vibrant and focused, balancing ripe fruit with lively acidity and a textured, finely structured mouthfeel. The brief aging in French barriques adds a gentle layer of complexity without overpowering the wine’s purity. While already approachable, it should continue to develop nicely over the next few years, gaining more depth and nuance.

Production
The wine comes from an old Godello parcel in Bierzo, planted in 1905 on clay and loam soils mixed with slate and quartz. Nacho Léon has been working this vineyard organically since 2013, and the fruit is harvested with care before whole-cluster pressing. The wine then spends four months in French barriques, adding subtle texture and complexity before bottling.

Food & Serving
This Godello is a natural match for grilled fish, shellfish, seafood pasta, roast chicken, and dishes with creamy sauces or fresh herbs. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C, and if desired, give it a short time to open in the glass rather than decanting heavily.

Bodegas Demencia de Autor is the personal project of winemaker Nacho Léon in Bierzo, a region traditionally associated with reds but increasingly recognized for exceptional whites as well. His careful work with old-vine Godello and the move to organic farming have helped bring attention to the variety’s potential in this part of northwest Spain. The separately bottled 2017 vintage marked an important step in defining the wine’s identity and quality.
