Description
Biscardo Amarone della Valpolicella Classico 2022 is a rich and powerful red from the historic hills surrounding Verona. Made in the traditional Amarone style, it is produced from hand-harvested grapes that are dried for around 120 days, concentrating their fruit, sugars and aromas. Its name, Amarone—meaning “the great bitter one”—is linked to the legend of a Recioto wine that fermented to dryness, losing its sweetness and developing a distinctive bitter edge.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep garnet-red colour. Its bouquet is intense, persistent and warmly vinous, with expressive notes of ripe cherries and subtle dried-fruit character. On the palate, it is full-bodied and velvety, combining generous cherry flavours with a delicate bitter note reminiscent of bitter almonds. Well-integrated tannins and a warming finish give the wine an appealing sense of depth and structure.
Amarone is designed to develop further in bottle, and the 2022 vintage can be enjoyed now for its rich fruit and supple texture or cellared for several years, provided it is kept in suitable conditions.
Production
The grapes are grown on the hills of the Valpolicella Classico area at elevations of approximately 150–400 metres, where the combination of hillside vineyards and a cooler climate helps preserve freshness. Harvesting is carried out by hand in the evening or early morning, when temperatures are low and the bunches remain intact. The grapes are then dried for around 120 days to concentrate their flavour and sugar, with the skins contributing colour, tannin and intensity. After drying, the grapes are crushed and fermented slowly at low temperature for up to 50 days. The wine matures first in stainless-steel tanks and is then finished in small wooden barrels.
Food & Serving
Serve at around 18–20°C, ideally after allowing the bottle to come to temperature gradually. A short decant of approximately 30–60 minutes can help open the wine and soften its powerful structure. Its rich, velvety character pairs especially well with grilled or braised red meat, game, hearty stews, mature hard cheeses and other robust winter dishes.
