Description

Binomio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo 2021 is a powerful, characterful red that showcases Montepulciano at its most refined and expressive. Sourced from select vineyards in Abruzzo, it brings together intensity, structure and a surprising elegance that makes it both cellar-worthy and immediately enjoyable. This is a modern classic that bridges tradition and contemporary winemaking, crafted for drinkers who appreciate depth and authenticity in their reds.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Binomio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo shows a deep, opaque ruby color with violet reflections at the rim, hinting at its concentration and youth. The nose is generous and layered, opening with dark cherry and ripe plum, followed by notes of blackberry, licorice and black pepper. With air, more complex aromas emerge: dried herbs, tobacco leaf, cocoa and a subtle balsamic lift. On the palate, it is full-bodied and structured yet well-balanced, with dense, ripe black fruit framed by firm but polished tannins. Flavors of black cherry, mulberry and dark plum are interwoven with hints of espresso, sweet spices, leather and a touch of graphite. The acidity is fresh and lively, giving the wine tension and length, while the finish is long, savory and slightly saline, reflecting its Abruzzese origins. While already approachable with a good decant, this vintage has the structure to evolve beautifully over 8–12 years, gaining tertiary notes of leather, truffle and dried flowers.

Production
Binomio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is sourced from carefully selected Montepulciano vineyards in Abruzzo, with a focus on higher-altitude sites and older vines rooted in predominantly calcareous and clay-rich soils. This rugged, often steep terroir, influenced by both the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains, yields naturally low yields and grapes of great concentration. Harvest is typically done by hand to ensure careful selection and intact fruit. In the cellar, the must is fermented in temperature-controlled tanks, with extended maceration on the skins to extract color, tannin and aromatic depth. The wine is then aged in oak—often a mix of French barriques and larger barrels—for a significant period to integrate the tannins, add complexity and respect the variety’s natural power, before further bottle aging prior to release.

Food & Serving
This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is a natural partner for rich, savory cuisine. It pairs beautifully with slow-cooked meat dishes such as lamb shanks, osso buco, braised beef, wild boar ragù and hearty meat lasagna, as well as grilled steaks, sausages and game. It also works very well with aged hard cheeses like pecorino, parmesan and mature asiago. For best enjoyment, serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended in its youth to soften the tannins and allow the aromatics to fully unfold.

Producer
Binomio is a collaborative project born from a desire to show the full potential of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, a grape that many scholars and producers believe has ancient Greek or Balkan roots, likely established in Abruzzo long before Roman times. The project focuses on historically significant areas such as the Peligna Valley—between Raiano and Sulmona—where Montepulciano is thought to have been present since at least the early first millennium BC, when the Paeligni people from Asia Minor or Illyria are believed to have settled. Binomio has earned a strong reputation within the region and beyond for producing intense yet refined expressions of Montepulciano, helping to elevate Abruzzo’s image from rustic country wines to serious, age-worthy reds that stand confidently alongside Italy’s most respected appellations.
