Description

Bernhard Ott Grüner Veltliner Engabrunner Ried Stein 1. Lage Bio 2022 is a precise, mineral-driven expression of top-site Wagram Grüner, crafted by one of Austria’s benchmark producers. Sourced from the Erste Lage (1. Lage) single vineyard Stein in Engabrunn and farmed organically, this wine captures both the depth and elegance that Grüner Veltliner can achieve in the right hands. It’s a serious, age-worthy white that still offers immediate drinking pleasure, balancing ripe fruit with a cool, stony backbone.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Engabrunner Ried Stein shows a pale to medium straw-yellow color with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youthful energy. The nose opens with precise aromas of green pear, yellow apple, lime zest and white pepper, layered with nuances of fennel fronds, fresh herbs and a distinct wet-stone minerality. Subtle hints of citrus blossom and a touch of smoky flint underscore the vineyard’s stony character. On the palate, this Grüner Veltliner is focused and linear, with a lively, finely etched acidity that carries flavors of crisp orchard fruit, grapefruit, quince and a delicate savory note reminiscent of celery salt and lovage. The texture is both silky and taut, showing excellent density without feeling heavy. The finish is long, salty-mineral and peppery, inviting another sip. Enjoyable now for its purity and vibrancy, it has the structure and extract to develop beautifully over the next 5–8 years, gaining more complexity, spice and creaminess with bottle age.

Production
Ried Stein in Engabrunn is a classified Erste Lage (1. Lage) site, marked by meager, stony soils rich in gravel and conglomerate over loess, offering excellent drainage and forcing the vines to root deep. The Wagram’s continental climate, with warm days and cool nights, helps Grüner Veltliner ripen fully while preserving tension and aromatic clarity. At Weingut Bernhard Ott, the vineyards are cultivated organically, with great emphasis on soil vitality, careful canopy management and handwork throughout the season. Grapes for the Engabrunner Ried Stein are selectively harvested by hand at optimal ripeness, then gently pressed to preserve freshness and finesse. Fermentation typically takes place with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and/or large neutral oak, followed by extended lees contact to enhance texture, complexity and stability, while keeping the wine’s precise, mineral-driven style intact.

Food & Serving
This Grüner Veltliner is exceptionally versatile at the table, pairing beautifully with freshwater fish, grilled sea bass, sashimi, and shellfish such as prawns or scallops, as well as classic Austrian dishes like Wiener Schnitzel, fried chicken and light veal preparations. Its peppery, herbal freshness also works well with seasonal vegetables, asparagus, artichokes, salads with citrus dressings, and soft cheeses such as young goat’s cheese or mild bloomy rinds. Serve at 9–11 °C to highlight its precision and aromatic lift. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes can help the wine open up, especially in its youth, revealing more layers of spice and minerality.

Producer
Weingut Bernhard Ott is widely regarded as one of Austria’s reference producers for Grüner Veltliner, based in the Wagram region where the variety thrives on loess and diverse, often stony soils. The Ott family has been growing wine for generations, but under Bernhard Ott’s leadership the estate has become a standard-bearer for meticulous organic farming, terroir-driven bottlings and a distinctive, finely chiseled style of Grüner. His single-vineyard wines from top sites such as Ried Stein are regularly celebrated by international critics and top restaurants, helping to cement Wagram’s reputation as a source of world-class white wines. Through low yields, rigorous hand selection and thoughtful, low-intervention cellar work, Weingut Bernhard Ott consistently produces wines that are both deeply rooted in their origins and highly sought after by discerning wine lovers.
