Description
Bernardus Chardonnay Monterey County 2023 is a rich yet finely balanced California Chardonnay, combining ripe fruit, creamy texture and refreshing acidity. Its polished oak character and Burgundian-inspired winemaking give the wine both depth and elegance, while the bright structure keeps the generous Monterey County style vibrant and approachable.
Tasting Notes
Bright golden in appearance, the wine opens with layered aromas of ripe pear, yellow apple and peach, followed by citrus blossom, vanilla, toasted almond and delicate spice. On the palate, it is full-bodied and silky, with flavours of ripe stone fruit, pear, yellow apple and fresh citrus. A creamy texture is balanced by lively acidity and subtle mineral notes, while hints of vanilla, toast and roasted almond add depth. The finish is long, harmonious and gently refreshing, with lingering ripe fruit, citrus and refined oak. It is drinking beautifully now and should develop gracefully over the short to medium term when properly stored.
Production
The Chardonnay is made using a combination of traditional Burgundian techniques and a contemporary Californian approach. A portion of the wine is cool-fermented in stainless steel to preserve freshness and vivid fruit character, while the remainder ferments in oak. The wine is then matured for seven months in French oak barrels, with bâtonnage adding richness, creaminess, structure and complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve this elegant Chardonnay lightly chilled at around 10–12°C. It is an excellent match for seared scallops, lobster, grilled salmon, roast or grilled poultry, creamy pasta dishes and risotto, and also pairs beautifully with soft, creamy cheeses. Decanting is not essential, although a brief 15–20 minutes of aeration can help reveal the wine’s layered fruit and subtle oak character.
Producer
Bernardus is a Californian producer known for elegant, polished wines that unite ripe regional fruit with a refined, European-inspired style. With a particular reputation for Chardonnay and wines from California’s Central Coast, the producer emphasises balance, texture and freshness rather than sheer weight. This Monterey County bottling reflects that signature approach, bringing together the region’s sunny fruit profile, cool-climate acidity and carefully integrated French oak.
