Description
Bergeronneau-Marion BDB Fût Old 2006 is a characterful Blanc de Blancs Champagne crafted entirely from Chardonnay and aged in old oak barrels. This vintage cuvée brings together the finesse of top-quality Champagne Chardonnay with the subtle complexity that only time and careful élevage can provide. Made in limited quantities by grower-producers F. Bergeronneau-Marion, it offers a distinctive, terroir-driven expression for Champagne enthusiasts seeking something a little off the beaten path.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, this Champagne shows a deep lemon-gold hue with a fine, persistent mousse that speaks to its extended aging. The nose opens with ripe citrus—lemon confit and candied orange peel—layered with baked apple, toasted brioche, hazelnut, and delicate notes of vanilla and chalky minerality. Hints of honeycomb, crème brûlée crust, and dried white flowers emerge with air, revealing the influence of old oak and long lees contact.
On the palate, it is full and mouth-filling yet beautifully balanced by Chardonnay’s natural acidity. Flavors of Meyer lemon, roasted pear, and yellow plum intertwine with pastry cream, toasted almonds, and subtle spice from the old barrels. The texture is creamy and rounded, with a long, savory, mineral-driven finish that carries notes of chalk, saline, and light oxidative complexity typical of mature vintage Champagne. Already superbly evolved, it is drinking wonderfully now but can still hold and develop further nuance over the next 3–5 years if well cellared.
Production
Sourced from Chardonnay vines rooted in the chalky, limestone-rich soils of the Montagne de Reims area, this Blanc de Blancs reflects a classic Champagne terroir known for precision and minerality. The grapes are typically harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and ensure careful selection in the vineyard. After gentle pressing, the base wines for BDB Fût Old are fermented and raised in old oak barrels, which lend texture and complexity without overt wood flavor. Extended aging on the lees in bottle adds depth, creaminess, and autolytic notes, culminating in a mature vintage Champagne with both structure and elegance.
Food & Serving
This is a gastronomic Champagne that shines at the table. Pair it with refined seafood dishes such as seared scallops, butter-poached lobster, turbot with beurre blanc, or oysters with a Champagne mignonette. It also works beautifully with roast chicken, veal in a light cream sauce, truffle risotto, aged Comté, or Parmesan. Serve chilled at around 10–12°C (50–54°F) to highlight both freshness and complexity. For maximum expression—especially given the vintage character—pour it into larger white wine glasses and consider a brief 15–20 minutes of gentle aeration in the bottle or a short decant to allow the aromas to fully unfurl.
Producer
F. Bergeronneau-Marion is a family-owned grower Champagne estate based in the Montagne de Reims, where they have been cultivating vines and crafting Champagne across several generations. As récoltant-manipulants, they farm their own vineyards and vinify their own wines, giving them full control from vine to bottle and allowing for highly individualized, terroir-focused cuvées. Known primarily for their expressive, characterful Champagnes that combine ripe fruit with chalk-driven freshness, Bergeronneau-Marion has earned a loyal following among Champagne lovers seeking authentic grower expressions beyond the large houses. Their use of traditional methods, careful vineyard work, and thoughtful use of oak in select cuvées, such as this BDB Fût Old, underlines their commitment to quality and personality in every bottle.
