Description
Benoît Ente’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières en la Richarde 2022 is a precise, mineral-driven expression of top-tier white Burgundy from one of Puligny’s most sought-after premier cru sites. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, it marries tension and purity with the richness of the 2022 vintage. This bottling draws on the historic reputation of Les Folatières—long celebrated for producing some of Puligny’s most refined, terroir-forward wines—while showcasing Benoît Ente’s ultra-meticulous, low-intervention approach.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine shows a luminous, pale straw color with green highlights, hinting at both youth and freshness. The nose is detailed and layered: white flowers, lemon zest, and crisp green apple are intertwined with notes of pear, fresh almonds, and a subtle smokiness. Underneath lies a distinct Puligny minerality—wet stone, chalk dust, and a whisper of flint—adding a serious, almost architectural backbone to the aromatics.
On the palate, this 2022 is both concentrated and finely etched. Bright citrus and orchard fruits lead—think Meyer lemon, ripe pear, and a touch of white peach—supported by a taut, saline core. The oak is discreet and beautifully integrated, contributing hints of hazelnut, vanilla pod, and delicate pastry without ever overshadowing the terroir. The texture is silky yet vibrant, carried by a line of mouthwatering acidity and a long, mineral-laced finish. While already impressive in its youth, the structure and balance suggest an excellent aging potential of 8–12 years, with further complexity emerging over time in the form of honey, brioche, and deeper nutty nuances.
Production
Les Folatières is one of Puligny-Montrachet’s most celebrated premier crus, noted for its well-draining limestone and marl soils on a gentle slope that captures both sunlight and cooling breezes. The sub-plot “en la Richarde” offers particularly fine, stony terroir that naturally limits yields and enhances concentration. Benoît Ente works with fastidious vineyard practices—careful canopy management, sustainable or organic-leaning methods, and hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to preserve freshness and balance in a warm year like 2022. In the cellar, the grapes are gently pressed and fermented in French oak, with a judicious proportion of new barrels to add texture without dominating the profile. The wine is aged on fine lees, typically with limited bâtonnage, to build depth while maintaining clarity and tension, followed by a period in tank or barrel for harmonization before bottling with minimal intervention.
Food & Serving
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru shines alongside refined dishes where texture and subtlety are key. Pair it with butter-poached lobster, seared scallops, turbot or sole with beurre blanc, or roast chicken with morel cream sauce. It also works beautifully with fine sushi and sashimi, Comté, aged Gruyère, and lightly truffled dishes. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) to showcase both aromatics and structure. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter or a few good swirls in a large Burgundy glass to open up the nose and allow the mineral spine and layered fruit to fully emerge.
Producer
Benoît Ente is widely regarded as one of the new-generation stars of Puligny-Montrachet, known for an almost obsessive attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar. Working from a relatively small domaine, he has steadily elevated quality over the past two decades, focusing on low yields, precise picking dates, and an ultra-clean, terroir-driven style. In the renowned village of Puligny, where competition is fierce and history runs deep, Benoît Ente has carved out a reputation for producing some of the most incisive, mineral, and finely balanced Chardonnays of the commune. His premier cru wines—especially from top sites like Les Folatières—are now sought after by collectors and sommeliers worldwide, frequently praised for their purity, energy, and ability to age gracefully.
