Description

Benoît Ente’s Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Truffière 2022 is a precise, chiselled expression of top-tier white Burgundy from one of the appellation’s rising stars. Crafted entirely from Chardonnay, this Premier Cru cuvée showcases Puligny’s signature tension and elegance, wrapped in the generous, sun-kissed character of the 2022 vintage. Sourced from the revered Clos de la Truffière, it combines fine-boned structure with depth and mineral drive, making it a standout choice for collectors and serious white Burgundy enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2022 Clos de la Truffière shows a pale, luminous straw-gold hue with green reflections, hinting at its freshness and youth. The nose opens with lifted aromas of white flowers, lemon zest and crisp green apple, followed by layers of pear, stone fruit and citrus oil. Subtle notes of hazelnut, fresh almonds, chalk and a touch of flint emerge with air, giving a clear sense of its Puligny-Montrachet origins. On the palate, this wine is focused and finely etched, combining a linear, saline minerality with a generous, silky texture. Expect precise citrus and orchard fruit—think Meyer lemon, white peach and golden apple—framed by racy acidity and a long, mouth-watering finish. Hints of brioche, light spice and nutty complexity point to sensitive élevage rather than heavy-handed oak. Still youthful, it already shows impressive harmony, but has the structure and acidity to evolve gracefully over 8–12 years from the vintage, gaining further complexity and depth with cellaring.

Production
Clos de la Truffière is a prized Premier Cru site in Puligny-Montrachet, known for its stony, limestone-rich soils and excellent drainage, which naturally limit yields and enhance concentration. The cool, breezy microclimate helps preserve acidity and aromatic precision, key to the wine’s tension and clarity. Benoît Ente is renowned for meticulous work in the vineyard, typically favoring careful hand-harvesting at optimal ripeness to retain vibrancy and avoid overripeness. In the cellar, the Chardonnay is gently pressed and fermented in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new wood to support, not dominate, the fruit and minerality. Aging on fine lees enhances texture and complexity while maintaining the wine’s purity, resulting in a refined, terroir-driven Puligny of notable precision.

Food & Serving
This Premier Cru Chardonnay is a superb match for refined seafood and white meat dishes. Think seared scallops, lobster with beurre blanc, poached turbot, Dover sole, or roast chicken with morel cream sauce. It also pairs beautifully with veal in light jus, creamy risottos and subtly flavored cow’s-milk cheeses like Comté or Beaufort. Serve at 10–12°C (50–54°F) in a generous white Burgundy glass to fully express its aromatics and texture. Young bottles will benefit from 30–45 minutes in a decanter to open up the nose and soften the structure, while more mature bottles can often be served directly from the bottle, with a gentle pour to avoid disturbing any sediment.

Producer
Benoît Ente is widely regarded as one of the most exciting and exacting growers in Puligny-Montrachet, crafting wines that are both deeply rooted in terroir and impeccably precise. Working from a relatively small domaine, he has built a reputation for low yields, rigorous vineyard work and a style that favours clarity, tension and mineral expression over sheer opulence. In a village famed for some of Burgundy’s most sought-after white wines, Benoît Ente’s bottlings sit comfortably among the most respected, often attracting the attention of collectors and sommeliers worldwide. His commitment to careful farming and thoughtful, minimalist winemaking has cemented his status as a benchmark producer in the Côte de Beaune, with his Premier Cru wines—like Clos de la Truffière—regularly celebrated for their finesse, purity and aging potential.
