Description

Bellingham The Bernard Series Bush Vine Pinotage Limited Release 2020 is a bold, characterful South African red that showcases the country’s signature grape at a seriously high level. Sourced from old, dryland bush vines and crafted in limited quantities, it offers depth, polish, and a sense of place that will appeal to both Pinotage devotees and curious collectors. Named for Bernard Podlashuk, the visionary behind Bellingham’s quality revolution, this wine continues a legacy of innovation and craftsmanship in the Cape.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, this 2020 Pinotage presents a deep ruby to garnet core with a vibrant, purple rim, hinting at concentration and youthful energy. The nose is expressive and layered, with ripe black plum, mulberry, and blackberry compote intertwined with notes of black cherry, baking spice, cocoa, and a touch of coffee bean and vanilla from well-judged oak. Subtle hints of fynbos, dried herbs, and a faint smokiness add complexity and a distinctly South African signature. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and richly textured, with juicy dark fruit at its core—think black plum, dark cherry, and bramble—supported by fine-grained tannins and a lively, refreshing acidity. Flavors of mocha, dark chocolate, sweet spice, and a gentle oak-toast frame the fruit without overpowering it, leading to a long, refined finish with notes of spice and graphite. The structure and concentration suggest that this 2020 has excellent aging potential; it should drink beautifully now with a bit of air, but it will continue to gain complexity and soften further over the next 6–10 years under good cellaring conditions.

Production
This Limited Release Pinotage is crafted from bush-vine parcels in top sites of the Cape’s coastal areas, where a combination of decomposed granite, shale, and well-drained, gravelly soils naturally limits yields and intensifies flavor. The bush vines, often dry-farmed, produce small, concentrated berries that capture both ripeness and freshness thanks to cooling maritime influences and significant diurnal temperature swings. Grapes are typically hand-harvested at optimal phenolic ripeness, with careful selection in the vineyard and at the cellar to ensure only the best fruit is used. In the winery, traditional fermentation on the skins extracts color, aroma, and structure, while careful temperature control preserves purity of fruit. The wine is then matured in a selection of oak barrels (often predominantly French, with some new oak in the mix) to build texture and complexity, polish the tannins, and integrate subtle notes of spice and toast, without overshadowing the varietal character of Pinotage.

Food & Serving
This is a versatile, food-friendly red that shines alongside richly flavored, savory dishes. Think grilled or braaied meats (lamb chops, beef ribeye, boerewors), slow-cooked short ribs, game dishes, or spice-rubbed pork. It also pairs beautifully with hearty stews, smoky barbecue, and robust vegetarian plates such as mushroom ragù, roasted aubergine, and lentil or bean casseroles. Strong, aged cheeses—like mature Cheddar or Gouda—make an excellent match as well. Serve at around 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. Decanting for 45–60 minutes is recommended in its youth to allow the aromatics to open up and the tannins to soften, especially if serving with more delicate dishes.

Bellingham is one of South Africa’s historic wine estates, with roots tracing back to the 17th century and a modern legacy shaped by Bernard Podlashuk, a pioneering figure in the Cape wine industry.
