Description
Bellingham The Bernard Series Basket Press Limited Release Syrah 2020 is a modern South African red that shows just how refined and characterful Cape Syrah can be. Crafted in small batches and basket‑pressed for a gentler extraction, it combines intensity with striking elegance. Named for Bellingham’s pioneering Bernard Podlashuk, this limited release celebrates the estate’s long-standing role in shaping premium South African wine.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Basket Press Syrah is a deep garnet with a vibrant purple rim, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose opens with layered aromas of blackberries, dark plums, and black cherries, supported by notes of cracked black pepper, violets, and smoked meat, with subtle accents of vanilla, cocoa, and sweet spice from careful oak maturation.
On the palate, this Syrah is full-bodied yet polished, with velvety tannins and a lively acid line that keeps the richness in check. Juicy black and blue fruit flavors are intertwined with savory elements of cured meat, chargrilled herbs, and graphite, leading into a long, spicy finish with hints of mocha and liquorice. The structure and balance suggest excellent aging potential: enjoy it now for its vibrant fruit, or cellar for 5–10 years to allow the tannins to further soften and the savory complexity to deepen.
Production
Fruit for The Bernard Series Basket Press Syrah typically comes from select high-quality sites in the Cape’s coastal areas, where decomposed granite and shale soils, combined with cooling afternoon breezes, produce concentrated yet finely structured grapes. Yields are deliberately kept low, and the grapes are harvested by hand at optimal ripeness to preserve both fruit purity and natural freshness. In the cellar, the must is gently fermented with regular but measured extraction to avoid harsh tannins, then pressed in traditional basket presses for a softer, more nuanced profile. The wine is matured in oak barrels (including a proportion of new French oak) to add texture and complexity without overwhelming the varietal character.
Food & Serving
This Syrah is a natural partner for richly flavored dishes: think grilled or braised lamb, ribeye steak, venison, slow-cooked beef short ribs, or game birds with roasted root vegetables. It also works beautifully with charcuterie, hard aged cheeses, and smoky barbecue. Serve at 16–18°C; if the wine is young and just opened, decant for 45–60 minutes to allow the aromatics and texture to fully unfold.
Producer
Bellingham is one of South Africa’s historic wine names, with roots dating back to the 17th century in the Franschhoek area. The estate gained modern prominence under Bernard and Fredagh Podlashuk, whose vision and experimentation helped to elevate the Cape’s fine wine reputation. Today, Bellingham’s Bernard Series pays tribute to that pioneering spirit, focusing on site selection, low yields, and thoughtful cellar work to produce characterful, age‑worthy wines that stand among the Cape’s most respected premium bottlings.
