Description
Belair-Monange 2021 is a refined, ageworthy Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé that captures the elegance and precision of a cooler, more classical Bordeaux vintage. Crafted primarily from Merlot with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, it balances depth and power with striking freshness. This cuvée stands out for its seamless integration of ripe fruit, mineral tension, and fine-grained tannins, making it a compelling choice for the cellar as well as for special occasions. Perched on some of the most prized limestone and clay-limestone terroirs of Saint-Émilion, Belair-Monange has long been associated with wines of finesse and longevity. Since its acquisition and revitalisation by the Moueix family, the estate has become one of the benchmark names on the Right Bank, uniting a historic vineyard site with meticulous, modern winemaking.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belair-Monange 2021 typically shows a deep ruby to garnet colour with vivid purple highlights, hinting at both concentration and youthful energy. Swirled in the glass, it reveals layered aromas of black cherry, ripe red plum, and wild berries, interwoven with notes of violets, dried rose petals, and a subtle graphite-like minerality. Hints of sweet baking spices, cocoa, and a touch of fine new oak add complexity without overshadowing the fruit.
On the palate, the 2021 is medium to full-bodied, with a poised, linear structure that reflects the cooler, more classical character of the vintage. Juicy dark fruits are framed by vibrant acidity and polished, chalky tannins, giving the wine both lift and definition. Nuances of cedar, tobacco leaf, and crushed stone linger on a long, refined finish. While already harmonious with a short decant, this is a wine built for evolution: expect it to develop beautifully over 10–20 years, gaining truffle, forest floor, and savoury complexity with time in bottle.
Production
Belair-Monange’s vineyards sit on some of Saint-Émilion’s most revered limestone plateaus and clay-limestone slopes, a terroir that naturally delivers wines of purity, tension, and aromatic lift. The 2021 vintage benefited from careful vineyard management, including rigorous green harvesting and hand-picking at optimal ripeness to preserve balance in a challenging year. After a meticulous sorting of the grapes, fermentation typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, parcel by parcel, to express the nuances of each plot. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new oak, to add structure and complexity while maintaining the clarity of fruit and the signature mineral backbone of the estate.
Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2021 is a superb partner for refined, savoury dishes such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal in a red wine reduction. It also pairs beautifully with truffled poultry, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Pecorino. Serve at 16–18°C (around 60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and fine structure. When young, decant for about 1–2 hours to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully open; as it matures, a shorter decant or simply allowing the wine to breathe in the glass will be sufficient.
Producer
Château Belair-Monange is one of the historic estates of Saint-Émilion, with roots that trace back centuries on the appellation’s famed limestone plateau.
