Description
Belair-Monange 2019 is a powerful, pedigreed Saint-Émilion from one of Bordeaux’s most historic limestone plateaus. In 2019, this grand vin shows the richer, more muscular side of the Right Bank, yet remains poised and finely detailed. Backed by the expertise of the Moueix family, it stands out as one of the estate’s most complete and age-worthy recent vintages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belair-Monange 2019 is deep garnet with a vibrant, almost purple hue at the rim, signaling both concentration and youth. The nose opens with sweet red and black cherries, wild berries and ripe plum compote, layered with vanilla bean, warm baking spices and a subtle cedar frame from fine new oak. With air, florals and a faint graphite-mineral edge emerge, reflecting its limestone terroir.
On the palate, this is full-bodied, broad and impressively structured, with a dense, layered core of sun-ripened fruit. The texture is plush yet controlled, the acidity bright and lively, and the tannins ripe, fine-grained and almost powdery. Notes of plum jam, black cherry, cocoa, clove and a touch of toasted oak carry through to a long, resonant finish. Still youthful and tightly knit, the 2019 has a clear long-term trajectory; it will drink well from around 2026 but has the structure to evolve gracefully for 20+ years in a good cellar.
Production
Château Belair-Monange sits on some of Saint-Émilion’s most prized limestone and clay-limestone soils, perched on the plateau and upper slopes overlooking the village. This terroir naturally limits yields and gives the wines their signature tension and mineral backbone beneath the richness of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Grapes are harvested by hand, plot by plot, with strict sorting to ensure only perfectly ripe, healthy berries make it into the grand vin. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled vats, allowing for a gentle, precise extraction of color, flavor and tannin. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, to add complexity and structure without overwhelming the fruit.
Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2019 calls for equally refined yet flavorful dishes: think roasted lamb with herbs, dry-aged ribeye, veal chops with morels, or slow-braised beef cheeks. It also pairs beautifully with truffle dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or old Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight both freshness and depth. If opened in its youth, decant for 1.5–2 hours to allow the tannins to soften and the complex layers of fruit, spice and minerality to fully unfold.
Producer
Château Belair-Monange is one of the historic names of Saint-Émilion, with roots that trace back centuries on the appellation’s fabled limestone plateau. Acquired and meticulously revitalized by the renowned Moueix family—also behind icons such as Trotanoy—it has re-emerged as a reference point for classically styled yet powerful Right Bank Bordeaux. The addition of fruit from the neighboring Magdelaine vineyard further enhanced the estate’s potential, and in recent vintages Belair-Monange has earned consistent critical acclaim for its combination of depth, elegance and age-worthiness, reinforcing its status among the region’s elite properties.
