Description

Belair-Monange 2013 is a poised, classically framed Right Bank Bordeaux that showcases the elegance of Merlot in a cooler vintage. Crafted by the renowned JP Moueix family, this Saint-Émilion wine delivers floral perfume, sleek structure, and a refined, medium-bodied profile that’s already showing its charms. While 2013 was a challenging year in Bordeaux, Belair-Monange stands out for its balance, graceful texture, and ability to age beautifully in the medium term.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Belair-Monange 2013 shows a deep ruby core with subtle garnet highlights forming at the rim, hinting at its evolving complexity. The nose is Merlot-driven and immediately inviting: plush red and black fruits—think redcurrant, ripe raspberry, and black cherry—are layered with floral notes of rose petals, gentle spice, and a touch of earth. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with sleek, fine-grained tannins that give it a polished, almost silky feel. The fruit remains fresh and precise rather than opulent, with red berries and dark cherries supported by subtle graphite, dried herbs, and a hint of cocoa. While it may lack the depth and concentration of the grandest vintages, it offers a very attractive balance of weight and finesse, with a clean, tapered finish. Already approachable, it should continue to drink well for another 8–12 years from now, rewarding those who enjoy Bordeaux at a more elegant, nuanced stage.

Production
Château Belair-Monange sits on some of Saint-Émilion’s most prized limestone and clay-limestone soils, just a stone’s throw from the village itself, which lend the wines their signature freshness and mineral drive. The 2013 vintage was marked by cool, challenging conditions, leading to careful vineyard work and strict selection to ensure only optimally ripe fruit was harvested, primarily Merlot with a supporting portion of Cabernet Franc. Grapes are traditionally harvested by hand, then sorted meticulously before fermentation in temperature-controlled vats. Aging typically takes place in French oak barrels (with a significant proportion new), where the wine develops its texture, fragrance, and subtle complexity before bottling at the estate.

Food & Serving
Belair-Monange 2013 shines at the table with refined, not overly rich dishes that complement its medium body and floral, red-fruited character. Think roast lamb with herbs, veal chops, duck breast, roasted poultry with truffle, or classic French bistro fare like entrecôte and pommes frites. It also pairs well with mushroom dishes, earthy lentil stews, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for best expression. Decanting for 30–60 minutes helps the bouquet open and softens the tannins, especially if enjoyed in the next few years.

Producer
Château Belair-Monange is one of the historic properties of Saint-Émilion, with vineyard origins dating back centuries on the appellation’s famed limestone plateau. Acquired and revitalized by the JP Moueix family—iconic Right Bank négociants and owners of estates such as Trotanoy—the château has undergone extensive investment in both vineyard and cellar, elevating quality to a new level. Its wines are now regarded as some of the most refined and classically styled in Saint-Émilion, known for their distinctive combination of floral aromatics, fine structure, and terroir-driven minerality. Belair-Monange holds an important place in the region, symbolizing the successful fusion of deep-rooted tradition with modern precision and meticulous care.
