Description
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2018 in magnum format is a beautifully polished Saint-Émilion that captures the grace and depth of this exceptional Right Bank terroir. Showing a deep granate-purple hue and remarkable aromatic complexity, it is already seductive yet clearly built for long-term cellaring. Offered here in 1.5L, this magnum holds even greater aging potential, making it an outstanding choice for collectors and special occasions.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2018 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is a dense, shimmering granate-purple, hinting at both concentration and youth. The nose is wonderfully expressive, opening with plum jam, kirsch and redcurrant jelly, interwoven with red roses and a touch of oolong tea. Subtle notes of melted licorice, raspberry leaf, iron ore and forest floor lend depth and a sense of place.
On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a luxurious core of black and red berry compote wrapped in ultra-fine, velvety tannins. The texture is seamless, with a precise, effortless acidity that carries the wine through to a long, earthy, gently mineral finish. There is an impeccable elegance to its structure—power without heaviness, richness without excess. Already delicious, it will benefit from another 3–4 years in bottle to fully unfurl its layers, and in magnum it should evolve gracefully over 20 years or more.
Production
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s most coveted limestone plateaus, where clay-limestone soils and steep slopes give naturally low yields and exceptional concentration. The vineyard is dominated by Merlot with a significant portion of Cabernet Franc, varieties that thrive on these cool, mineral-rich soils and bring both plush fruit and aromatic lift. Harvesting is carried out parcel by parcel at optimal ripeness, with careful selection to capture only the finest berries. In the cellar, the must is vinified in temperature-controlled vats to preserve fruit purity and terroir expression, followed by élevage in French oak barrels, a portion of which are new, to add finesse, structure and subtle spice while never overpowering the wine’s inherent elegance.
Food & Serving
This Saint-Émilion is a natural partner for refined, savory dishes: think roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with morel cream. It also pairs beautifully with truffled dishes, wild mushrooms, and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or mature Gouda. Serve at 16–18°C (60–65°F) to highlight its aromatics and texture. In its youth, especially from magnum, decant for 1–2 hours to let the wine open up; as it develops with age, a gentle 30–60 minute decant is sufficient to remove sediment and allow the bouquet to blossom.
Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is a historic, small jewel of Saint-Émilion, long revered for its privileged position on the limestone plateau and its ability to produce some of the appellation’s most distinctive, terroir-driven wines. Family-owned for generations, the estate has consistently been regarded as one of the region’s benchmark properties, its name closely associated with depth, elegance and ageworthiness. Over the years, Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has earned critical acclaim and a devoted following among Bordeaux lovers for its combination of classical structure, mineral tension and a refined, almost Burgundian sense of detail—qualities that shine clearly in the 2018 vintage.
