Description

From one of Saint-Émilion’s most storied limestone slopes, the 2012 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) in magnum format is a classic, quietly powerful Right Bank Bordeaux. This vintage marries structure and finesse, offering a wine that already drinks beautifully yet still has years of evolution ahead. Bottled in 1.5L, it’s ideal for collectors and for the table when you want a truly expressive Saint-Émilion to share.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2012 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) shows a deep, vibrant ruby core with faint garnet at the rim, signalling its early maturity. The nose is intense yet refined: ripe blackberry and blackcurrant interlace with cedar shavings, cigar tobacco, graphite and a subtle earthy, pencil-box nuance that gives it an almost Left Bank character. Hints of dried violet, baking spice and a touch of cocoa emerge with air, adding complexity and depth. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a firm, well-knit structure and fine, polished tannins. Dark berry fruit – blackberry, black cherry and plum – is supported by lively, fresh acidity that keeps the wine lifted and precise. There’s a savoury streak of tobacco, cedar and crushed stone running through the mid-palate, giving it a slightly masculine, architectural feel without sacrificing charm or juiciness. The finish is long, harmonious and refined, with lingering notes of dark fruit and spice. In magnum, the 2012 has excellent aging potential: it is already very enjoyable but should continue to develop additional tertiary complexity over the next 10–15 years, and potentially longer under proper cellaring.

Production
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) sits on Saint-Émilion’s famed limestone plateau, a terroir of thin clay over hard limestone that naturally limits yields and gives wines their hallmark tension, minerality and aging capacity. The vineyard is predominantly planted to Merlot with a significant proportion of Cabernet Franc, reflecting the classic Right Bank blend. Grapes are typically harvested by hand in small parcels at optimal ripeness, allowing for strict selection in the vineyard and at the sorting table. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled vats, where gentle extraction preserves fruit purity and fine tannin texture, followed by élevage in French oak barriques (with a judicious percentage of new oak) to layer in complexity without overwhelming the wine’s terroir-driven character.

Food & Serving
This 2012 Saint-Émilion shines alongside refined, savoury dishes: think roast lamb with garlic and rosemary, slow-braised beef cheeks, duck breast, or veal with wild mushrooms. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, truffle-inflected dishes and aged hard cheeses such as Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to allow the structure to soften and the bouquet of dark fruit, cedar and tobacco to fully unfurl, especially in magnum format.

Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is one of Saint-Émilion’s historic estates, long recognized for producing some of the appellation’s most characterful and ageworthy wines. Perched on the limestone plateau just outside the medieval village, the property benefits from some of the finest terroir in the region, which has underpinned its status as a premier Grand Cru Classé. Over the years, the estate has built a reputation among Bordeaux enthusiasts for deeply structured yet refined wines that reward patience, with several legendary vintages cementing its cult following. Its combination of privileged site, traditional yet precise winemaking and consistently high critical praise has made Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) a reference point for serious Saint-Émilion collectors.
