Description

Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 2011 in magnum format is a poised and noble Saint-Émilion that beautifully captures the limestone-rich heights of Bordeaux’s Right Bank. This 80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc blend shows striking purity, dense mineral drive, and a singular personality that sets it apart within the 2011 vintage. Bottled in 1.5L, it promises an extended, graceful evolution and is considered one of the longest-lived wines of the year.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2011 Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is deep ruby to garnet, with an almost opaque core hinting at its concentration and youthfulness for the vintage. The nose is intense and finely etched, offering layers of blue and black fruits—think blackberry, black cherry, and blueberry—wrapped around a vivid, chalky minerality. Subtle notes of violets, graphite, cocoa, and a touch of spice add further complexity as it opens. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a beautifully refined texture: silky yet firmly structured. The ripe Merlot delivers succulent dark fruit, while the Cabernet Franc brings lift, aromatic brightness, and a subtle savory edge. There’s great precision and clarity, with the limestone terroir showing through in a cool, stony backbone and lingering saline finish. Tannins are fine-grained but still assertive in magnum, suggesting significant aging potential. Enjoy now with a long decant, but the wine is at its best from about 4–5 years after the vintage and can comfortably evolve for two decades or more, especially in this larger format.

Production
Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) sits on one of Saint-Émilion’s most coveted limestone plateaus, where clay-limestone soils over pure bedrock provide exceptional drainage and impart the estate’s hallmark chalky minerality. Vines—predominantly old-vine Merlot with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc—are carefully tended and harvested by hand to ensure optimal ripeness and meticulous selection in the cellar. The 2011 blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc underwent traditional Bordeaux vinification, with fermentation in temperature-controlled vats and an extended maceration to extract color, aroma, and fine tannins, followed by élevage in French oak barrels to refine structure, add subtle spice, and preserve the wine’s remarkable purity and precision.

Food & Serving
This elegant yet concentrated Saint-Émilion is a natural match for classic dishes such as roast lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, duck breast, or veal with truffle jus. It also pairs beautifully with game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and aged hard cheeses like Comté or Manchego. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) to highlight its aromatic complexity and balance. Given its youthfulness in magnum, decant for 2–3 hours before serving to allow the wine to fully open and show its layered fruit, floral notes, and signature limestone-driven minerality.

Producer
Château Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) is a historic, family-linked estate in Saint-Émilion, long admired for producing deeply expressive, terroir-driven wines from its prime position on the appellation’s limestone plateau. Classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé, the château is renowned for crafting some of the Right Bank’s most characterful and ageworthy wines, often among the standouts of their vintages. Over the years, Beauséjour (Duffau Lagarrosse) has earned a loyal following from collectors and critics alike for its ability to combine power with finesse, showcasing the unique personality of its chalk-rich soils in wines that age gracefully for decades.
