Bastianich Calabrone 2020

Bastianich Calabrone is a bold and characterful red from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, bringing together the region’s native identity with the Bastianich family’s winemaking vision. Crafted from Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Merlot, Pignolo, and Schioppettino, it stands out for its depth, structure, and distinctive aromatic intensity.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, Calabrone shows a deep ruby-red colour, already hinting at its concentration and richness. The nose is generous and layered, with aromas of dark chocolate, coffee, warming spices, and ripe red fruit. On the palate, it is structured and firmly gripped, yet remains refined and elegant, with a savoury core and impressive balance. This is a wine with excellent ageing potential, likely to gain even more complexity with a few years in bottle.

Production
The grapes come from Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region known for combining cool-climate freshness with excellent conditions for expressive, food-friendly reds. Rather than being dried, the fruit is carefully selected on sorting tables, then destemmed, crushed, and fermented in stainless steel at a controlled temperature of 25–27°C to preserve purity and structure. This approach allows the wine to express both the traditional Friulian blend and the precision of modern vinification.

Food & Serving
Calabrone pairs beautifully with roasted meats, grilled game, braised beef, and rich dishes with herbs or spices. It also works well with aged cheeses and hearty pasta dishes. Serve at around 16–18°C, and consider decanting for an hour or two to help the wine open up and show its full aromatic and textural complexity.
