Barbeito, Verdelho Colheita, 2022

Barbeito’s Verdelho Colheita 2022 is a vibrant Madeira white that captures the island’s unmistakable sense of place. Salt-kissed, mineral-driven and beautifully precise, it combines the freshness of Verdelho with a subtle touch of Sercial for extra tension and lift.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, it shows a bright citrus-yellow hue. The nose is expressive and layered, with tropical fruit, zesty citrus, a hint of toasted oak and a distinct saline edge that speaks of Madeira’s volcanic soils and Atlantic influence. The palate is dry, creamy and tightly focused, with crisp acidity and a mineral core that gives the wine real energy. The finish is long and mouthwatering, leaving a fresh, slightly saline impression. It should drink beautifully now and will also gain additional complexity with short to medium-term cellaring.

Production
The grapes are hand-harvested at the end of September from Madeira’s steep, high-altitude vineyards, where volcanic soils, ocean breezes and cool nights shape the wine’s character. Half of the Verdelho is gently foot-trodden and cold-macerated for three days, while the other half is pressed whole and directly; the Sercial is also pressed directly. Fermentation takes place at low temperature over several weeks using natural yeasts, preserving the wine’s purity and mineral expression. Half of the wine is aged for one year in French oak, with the remainder kept in stainless steel to maintain freshness and structure.

Food & Serving
This is an excellent match for grilled fish, shellfish, sushi, ceviche, roasted poultry and light dishes with citrus or herbs. Serve well chilled, around 8–10°C, and decanting is not necessary.
