Description

Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a refined expression of Sangiovese Grosso from one of Tuscany’s most respected estates. This is classic Brunello: structured, deeply flavored, and crafted to age gracefully, yet already seductive in its youth. Sourced from carefully selected vineyards around the Castello Banfi estate, it captures the warmth, elegance, and aromatic complexity that have made Brunello di Montalcino a benchmark Italian red.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2020 Banfi Brunello shows a vibrant garnet core with ruby highlights along the rim, hinting at both concentration and freshness. The nose opens with dark cherry and wild red berry, followed by notes of dried rose, violets, and a gentle swirl of Tuscan herbs. As it evolves in the glass, subtler layers of tobacco leaf, spice box, cedar, and a touch of leather emerge, framed by well-integrated oak. On the palate, this is medium to full-bodied with a precise, linear structure. Ripe cherry, plum, and red currant take the lead, supported by savory undertones of fennel seed, earth, and a hint of cocoa. The tannins are fine-grained yet firm, giving the wine both grip and elegance, while fresh acidity keeps everything lifted and vibrant. The finish is long and mineral-tinged, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, and dried flowers. While already enjoyable with proper aeration, the 2020 has the balance and structure to evolve beautifully for 10–15 years or more in a good cellar.

Production
This Brunello is crafted from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on Banfi’s estate vineyards in the southern part of Montalcino, where rolling hills, mixed marly and stony soils, and excellent drainage help produce concentrated, aromatic grapes. The Mediterranean climate—warm days, cool nights, and steady breezes—promotes slow, even ripening and preserves acidity. Grapes are hand-harvested parcel by parcel at optimal maturity, then carefully sorted before fermentation. Vinification typically takes place in temperature-controlled tanks to retain purity of fruit and terroir expression, followed by extended maceration for structure and depth. The wine is then aged according to Brunello di Montalcino DOCG regulations, spending years in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and French oak barriques to refine tannins, build complexity, and integrate subtle spice before bottling and further bottle aging prior to release.

Food & Serving
Banfi Brunello di Montalcino 2020 is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as bistecca alla fiorentina, grilled or roasted lamb, braised short ribs, or game like venison and wild boar. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses, especially Tuscan pecorino, and earthy mushroom or truffle-based dishes. Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) for optimal aromatic expression. For a young vintage like 2020, decanting for 1–2 hours is recommended to soften the tannins and allow the bouquet to fully unfold.

Producer
Banfi is one of the landmark names of Montalcino, founded in the late 1970s by the Mariani family with the ambitious goal of creating a world-class winery centered around the historic Castello Banfi estate. Over the decades, Banfi has played a pioneering role in the region, investing heavily in clonal research on Sangiovese and in sustainable vineyard practices that helped elevate the overall quality of Brunello di Montalcino. Today, Banfi is recognized as a key ambassador for Tuscan wines on the international stage, known for combining meticulous vineyard management and modern winemaking with deep respect for tradition. Their Brunello bottlings, in particular, have become benchmarks for consistent quality, typicity, and aging potential.
