Description
Bacalhôa Chardonnay 2024 is a polished white wine from Portugal’s sunlit Setúbal Peninsula, combining ripe fruit with the depth and texture of French oak. Sourced from the limestone-rich hills of Azeitão, it reflects Bacalhôa’s longstanding focus on bringing international grape varieties to the region. The wine is shaped by a traditional barrel-fermentation and bâtonnage regime, giving it an especially rounded, gastronomic style.
Tasting Notes
Bright and inviting in the glass, the wine offers aromas of ripe citrus, orchard fruit and subtle vanilla, complemented by delicate toasted and creamy notes from the oak. On the palate, it is smooth and textured, with refreshing acidity balancing the wine’s ripe fruit character. Regular bâtonnage contributes a fuller mouthfeel and added complexity, while the finish is lingering and gently oaked. It is best enjoyed in its youth, though its structure and barrel maturation should allow it to develop additional softness and harmony over the next few years.
Production
The Chardonnay grapes come from the Cove da Ursa vineyard in the hills of Azeitão on the Setúbal Peninsula. The site’s stony soils, rich in calcareous schist, contribute mineral freshness and structure. The grapes are fermented in new French oak barrels, after which three-quarters of the wine continues to mature in these barrels for four months. During this period, the wine undergoes regular bâtonnage—the stirring of the fine lees—to enhance texture, softness and complexity.
Food & Serving
Serve chilled at approximately 10–12°C to allow both the fruit and oak character to show clearly. Its creamy texture and balanced freshness make it a natural match for roasted or grilled fish, shellfish, poultry with cream-based sauces, risotto and mildly seasoned soft cheeses. Decanting is not necessary, although opening the bottle 15–20 minutes before serving can help the wine’s aromas unfold.
Producer
Bacalhôa is one of the best-known wine producers on Portugal’s Setúbal Peninsula, with its estate at Palácio e Quinta da Bacalhôa in the picturesque town of Vila Nogueira de Azeitão. The property is a popular destination for wine tourism and is closely associated with the region’s historic winemaking landscape. Bacalhôa is recognised for combining Portuguese and international grape varieties across a broad portfolio, showcasing the versatility of Setúbal’s distinctive vineyards.
