Babylonstoren Babel Red 2024 is a distinctive South African red blend from the Simonsberg, where warm days, cool mountain influences and varied soils create ideal conditions for expressive, full-bodied wines. Led by Shiraz and complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, Malbec and Pinotage, it takes a refreshingly unconventional approach to Cape blending. The wine is made at Babylonstoren, one of the Cape Winelands’ historic farm estates, whose roots reach back to the early eighteenth century.

Tasting Notes
Deep ruby red in the glass, the wine opens with inviting aromas of dark cherries, mulberries and dark chocolate, followed by nuances of sweet tobacco and pencil shavings. The palate is full-bodied and muscular, with concentrated dark-fruit flavours, well-integrated structure and a smooth, silky finish that keeps the wine balanced and approachable. Babylonstoren Babel Red is enjoyable now for its generous fruit and polished texture, but it should gain further complexity with short-term cellaring. Drink it over the next five years, allowing the darker fruit, spice and savoury notes to develop further.

Production
The fruit comes from the Simonsberg area of South Africa’s Western Cape, a celebrated wine-growing region benefiting from a favourable combination of sunlight, mountain influence and diverse terroirs. For the 2024 vintage, winemaker Klaas Stoffberg blends 48% Shiraz with 13% Merlot, 11% Petit Verdot, 10% Malbec and 7% Pinotage, with the remaining portion drawn from the estate’s wider red-variety selection. The wine is matured in a combination of oak barrels and stainless-steel tanks, preserving its fruit profile while adding depth, texture and gentle savoury complexity.

Food & Serving
A versatile partner for richly flavoured dishes, this red blend works particularly well with grilled or slow-roasted beef, lamb, venison, barbecue dishes and hearty stews. It also suits burgers with mature cheese, roasted vegetables and hard cheeses. Serve at 16–18°C. Decanting is not essential, but 30–60 minutes in a decanter can help the wine’s dark fruit and savoury nuances open up, especially when enjoyed young.
