Description
Azelia Barolo Bricco Fiasco 2017 is a single-cru Barolo from the steep, sun-drenched slopes of Castiglione Falletto in Piemonte. Crafted entirely from old-vine Nebbiolo, it marries depth and power with a striking sense of precision and grace. This historic cru has been bottled separately since 1978 and remains a cornerstone of the Scavino family’s identity, offering collectors a pure and ageworthy expression of one of Barolo’s most revered villages.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2017 Bricco Fiasco shows a vibrant garnet core with brick-red reflections at the rim, already hinting at its Nebbiolo heritage. The bouquet is expansive and refined: rose petals, violets, dried cherry and raspberry are interwoven with blood orange, sweet spices, licorice, and a subtle earthy, tarry undertone. With air, notes of wild strawberry, menthol, and a touch of tobacco emerge, adding layers of complexity.
On the palate, the wine is both enveloping and structured, with the old vines contributing a remarkable concentration and fine, filigreed tannins. Red and black cherry, macerated raspberry, and plum meet savory hints of leather, dried herbs, and mineral-laced acidity. The 2017 vintage brings a generous, warm-fruited core, yet the wine remains impeccably balanced, with a long, floral and slightly spicy finish. Enjoyable now with proper aeration, it has the structure to evolve beautifully over 15–25 years, gaining more truffle, forest floor, and balsamic nuances with time in bottle.
Production
Bricco Fiasco is a steep, warm hilltop vineyard in Castiglione Falletto, rooted in classic Barolo soils of calcareous clay and sand that give Nebbiolo both perfume and tension. The vines here average around 65 years of age, naturally limiting yields and intensifying flavor and complexity in the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand to ensure careful selection of perfectly ripe bunches, parcel by parcel. In the cellar, the fruit is traditionally vinified, with an extended maceration on the skins to extract fine tannins, color, and aromatic depth. The wine is then aged in large oak casks—often Slavonian or neutral untoasted wood—to preserve the purity of the cru and allow the vineyard character to take center stage rather than overt oak influence.
Food & Serving
This Barolo is a natural partner for rich, savory dishes such as braised beef (brasato al Barolo), ossobuco, slow-cooked lamb, and game birds like pheasant or duck. It also shines with truffle dishes, wild mushroom risotto, aged hard cheeses, and robust ragù over fresh egg pasta (tajarin, pappardelle). Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Burgundy or Barolo glasses to allow full aromatic expression. Decant for 1.5–3 hours in its youth to soften the tannins and open the bouquet; older bottles (10+ years of age) will benefit from a more gentle, shorter decant, primarily to separate any sediment.
