Avignonesi Desiderio Merlot Magnum 2021

Avignonesi Desiderio 2021 is a powerful Tuscan red presented in an impressive magnum format, blending Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon for a rich yet finely structured expression. Produced from organically and biodynamically farmed vineyards, it combines generous dark fruit with polished tannins, spice and well-integrated oak. Its name pays tribute to Desiderio, a legendary Chianina bull once kept at Avignonesi’s Le Capezzine estate.

Tasting Notes
Deep and intense in appearance, the wine opens with concentrated aromas of blackberry and ripe cherry, followed by liquorice, dark chocolate and a refreshing hint of mint. The palate is broad and enveloping, with dense yet velvety tannins providing structure and balance. Oak-derived spice is seamlessly integrated, carrying the wine towards a long, persistent finish. The combination of ripe fruit, firm tannins and extended oak maturation gives Desiderio excellent cellaring potential. The 2021 vintage can be enjoyed now with decanting, while further bottle development over the next decade or more should bring added complexity and softness.

Production
The grapes are sourced from selected parcels between Montepulciano and Cortona, where the soils range from clay and river sediment in Cortona to clay- and silt-rich soils around Montepulciano. Each parcel and grape variety is harvested separately at optimal ripeness and vinified individually. After destemming and crushing, fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, followed by maceration on the skins. Malolactic fermentation occurs in wood, and after blending, the wine matures for 20 months in oak barrels, including some new oak.

Food & Serving
A natural partner for rich, hearty dishes such as Tuscan beef, grilled or braised Chianina beef, roast lamb and wild boar ragù. It also pairs well with aged hard cheeses and earthy mushroom dishes. Serve at 16–18°C after allowing the bottle to come to temperature. Decant for around one to two hours before serving, particularly when opening the wine young; the magnum format is especially well suited to extended maturation and sharing at the table.
