August Eser’s 1976 Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese is a rare, mature Rheingau sweet wine from one of Germany’s highest Prädikat categories. Presented in a 0.35-litre bottle, it is a particularly precious collector’s item, offering the depth and concentration that come from more than four decades of bottle maturation.

Tasting Notes
Deep golden in colour, this mature Riesling opens with an intense bouquet of honey, dried fruit and warm spices. On the palate, layers of ripe peach, apricot and citrus are complemented by a subtle hint of vanilla. Despite its rich sweetness, the wine retains a fine, refreshing acidity that brings balance, precision and elegance to the finish. Now fully mature, this 1976 Trockenbeerenauslese is best enjoyed for its developed character. Properly stored bottles may continue to evolve, although the condition of an individual mature wine naturally depends on its storage history and ullage level.

Production
The wine comes from Oestricher Lenchen in the Rheingau, a renowned site for Riesling shaped by the region’s favourable conditions for producing richly concentrated sweet wines. Trockenbeerenauslese is made from individually hand-selected, highly shrivelled Riesling grapes, traditionally affected by noble rot, which concentrates their sugars, aromas and flavours. The resulting wine was matured for more than 40 years in bottle, allowing its fruit, sweetness and acidity to develop remarkable complexity.

Food & Serving
Serve lightly chilled, around 10–12°C, to preserve the wine’s freshness while allowing its mature aromas to unfold. It is a natural partner for fruit-based desserts, crème brûlée, pâtisserie and blue or mature cheeses, and can also be enjoyed on its own as a contemplative digestif. Decanting is usually unnecessary for a delicate, mature sweet wine; if sediment is present, pour carefully or stand the bottle upright before serving.
