Description
Domaine Armand Rousseau’s Gevrey-Chambertin Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru 2009 is one of the great benchmarks of Burgundy, showing why this site is often regarded as Grand Cru in all but name. In the hands of one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most revered producers, the warm, generous 2009 vintage is shaped into a wine of rare depth, precision, and elegance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, it typically shows a deep ruby hue with youthful intensity and graceful clarity. The nose is expansive and complex, with ripe dark cherry, plum, and raspberry layered over forest floor, leather, spice, and a subtle mineral backbone.
The palate is rich and silken, yet remarkably composed, with lush fruit balanced by finely etched tannins and the vineyard’s hallmark sense of tension. The finish is long and refined, unfolding with notes of spice, earth, a hint of licorice, and lingering freshness. This is a wine with excellent aging potential and should continue to evolve beautifully for many years.
Production
Clos St. Jacques is one of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most prized Premier Cru vineyards, positioned on an east-facing slope that captures morning light while retaining freshness and structure. The combination of the site’s ideal exposure and its distinctive limestone-rich terroir helps deliver both power and finesse, especially in a warm vintage like 2009.
Armand Rousseau is known for farming and vinifying with great restraint, allowing the character of the vineyard and vintage to speak clearly. The wine is produced from Pinot Noir, with careful harvesting and traditional Burgundy winemaking practices designed to preserve purity, detail, and balance.
Food & Serving
Best served at around 16–18°C, with a gentle decant if the bottle is young or tightly closed; older bottles should be handled with more caution and minimal aeration. It pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck, pigeon, quail, veal, or mushroom-based cuisine, as well as truffle risotto and other refined preparations that complement Burgundy’s earthy complexity.
Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most legendary estates, long admired for its meticulous vineyard holdings, classically styled wines, and exceptional consistency. Based in Gevrey-Chambertin, the domaine has earned an outstanding reputation for producing some of the region’s most sought-after Pinot Noir, including acclaimed parcels in both Premier Cru and Grand Cru vineyards. Its wines are widely regarded as reference points for finesse, terroir expression, and longevity.
