Description

Armand Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2021 is a refined expression of Gevrey-Chambertin Grand Cru, balancing purity of fruit with the estate’s signature finesse. This is a wine for Burgundy lovers who appreciate delicacy over power: finely perfumed, effortlessly elegant, yet with the depth to reward patience in the cellar. As one of the benchmark names in the Côte de Nuits, Rousseau captures the classic charm and silkiness that have made Charmes-Chambertin so sought-after among collectors.

Tasting Notes
In the glass, the 2021 Charmes-Chambertin shows a luminous, medium ruby hue, youthful and vibrant. The nose is immediately seductive: red cherry, wild strawberry and raspberry compote mingle with notes of rose petals and peony, subtle baking spice, a hint of orange zest, and a delicate smokiness and underbrush that speak clearly of Gevrey terroir. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet wonderfully layered, with a silken texture and very fine, chalk-dust tannins. The red-fruited core is precise and pure rather than opulent, supported by vivid acidity that gives the wine lift and definition. Hints of spice, forest floor and a gentle mineral line unfurl with air, leading to a long, graceful finish that lingers on red berries and floral notes. While already extremely charming in its youth, this 2021 has the structure and balance to age gracefully over 10–15 years, gaining complexity and tertiary nuance with time in bottle.

Production
Sourced from the revered Grand Cru climat of Charmes-Chambertin in Gevrey-Chambertin, on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, this wine reflects a classic mix of shallow limestone and clay-limestone soils that encourage both aromatic lift and textural finesse. Armand Rousseau farms these old-vine Pinot Noir parcels with meticulous care, favoring low yields and precise vineyard work to achieve optimal ripeness without excess weight, particularly crucial in a cooler, more finely etched vintage like 2021. Grapes are hand-harvested and strictly sorted in the cellar to ensure only pristine fruit is used. Vinification follows traditional Burgundian methods: gentle destemming (often with a portion of whole clusters, depending on vintage conditions), a cool maceration to draw out fragrance and color, and fermentation in open wooden or stainless-steel vats with native yeasts. Élevage typically takes place in French oak barrels, with a judicious proportion of new wood to support, rather than dominate, the wine’s delicate perfume and terroir expression.

Food & Serving
This Grand Cru’s finesse and aromatic complexity make it a superb partner for refined dishes rather than heavy, rustic fare. Consider pairing it with roast duck breast with cherries, milk-fed veal, pigeon, or guinea fowl, as well as delicate lamb preparations or veal sweetbreads. It also works beautifully with earthy accents such as morel or chanterelle mushrooms, truffle-inflected dishes, and aged but not overly powerful cheeses like Comté or mild Tomme. Serve at 15–16°C (59–61°F) to highlight its perfume and freshness. Young bottles will benefit from a gentle decant of 30–45 minutes to allow the aromatics to open, while older vintages should be handled carefully and decanted briefly only to remove sediment.

Producer
Domaine Armand Rousseau is one of Burgundy’s most revered and influential estates, widely regarded as a reference point for Gevrey-Chambertin and the Côte de Nuits as a whole. Founded in the early 20th century by Armand Rousseau and expanded by subsequent generations, the domaine was among the first to bottle and market its own wines, helping to define the modern reputation of Burgundy’s great crus. Today it holds an enviable collection of top vineyards, including Chambertin, Clos de Bèze and Charmes-Chambertin, and is celebrated for a style that marries clarity of fruit, aromatic purity and textural elegance. Consistent critical acclaim and a steadfast commitment to traditional, terroir-driven winemaking have cemented Armand Rousseau’s status as one of the region’s true benchmarks.
